I have written on the Port du Crouesty area, part of the town of Arzon in the Rhuys peninsula on several previous posts in my blog. Of course, this is in my beautiful Morbihan dept 56 of my lovely Bretagne and in my belle France, I have come here since moving into the area back in 2011, and had great family times over the years. I came to this chapel after my dear late wife Martine passing and missed her company ; all nice memories that are worth reliving them again and again. I found me a picture in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me, Therefore, here is my take on the Chapelle Notre Dame du Crouesty or Arzon !!! Hope you enjoy it as I
The Chapelle Notre Dame du Crouesty is dedicated to the Virgin and sailors. In the 6C, the monks of Rhuys Abbey built an oratory there to house a cross they had carried in procession. A chapel was later built. Built too close to the coast, which the sea relentlessly eroded, the chapel collapsed several times. However, it has always been rebuilt. The current building dates from 1826. To the right of the portal, a superb granite “lech” is set into the ground, with a cavity called a “cupule” at the top , This is one of the first Christian lechs found around Breton chapels and which evoke the first Christian cults practiced in Armorica (current Brittany). Near the chapel, on May 11, 565, the body of Saint Gildas who died on January 29 on the island of Houat , had been abandoned to the waves for three months, in accordance with his wishes. The body of the Blessed Father was then transported to the abbey he had founded, (see post Saint Gildas des Rhuys) where he was buried. Since then, the monks of Rhuys have come here in procession every year on the first Rogation Day. The Holy Abbot of Rhuys died on the island of Houat. According to his last wishes, his body was placed in this small boat and abandoned to the winds and waves. The monks then transported the saint’s remains to the Rhuys monastery. In the past, when a local ship left Port-Navalo (see post) for a long voyage and arrived in sight of the Crouesty Chapel, the captain and sailors would uncover their heads and recite a prayer while the flag was lowered three times to salute the house of Mary. This custom has disappeared. However, our sailors, on all the seas of the world, still pray to the Virgin of Crouesty and ask her to bring them home safe and sound.

The monks of the Abbey of Saint Gildas (see post), founded by Abbot Gildas in 538, came to this shore to hold processions. They built the first oratory at the beginning of the 6C to house the processional cross, hence the name Croes-Ty, meaning “house of the cross” in Breton. In 1666, according to Joseph Couëdel, former mayor of Arzon, the chapel consisted of three parts from different periods. The latter disappeared, and the current chapel was rebuilt in 1826, further back from the shore, although the lintel of the south door indicates 1822!, It was restored between 2012 and 2014 by the Arzon City/town hall, and its bell, dismantled in 1978, was replaced and blessed on August 15, 2014. It is visited daily in summer from 17h to 19h Every year on August 15, a Mass is said there in memory of sailors lost at sea. The boats anchored at the entrance to the port are blessed there and then go to lay a wreath of flowers at sea.
