The Grille du Roi of the Potager du Roi of Versailles !!!

This is a wonderful tuck away beautiful site for nature lovers and those who enjoy the good eating in my belle France. It happened to be in my beloved former home city of Versailles in a beautiful setting and lately helped on renovations of it. Glad to find me again a picture in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me. Therefore, let me tell you a bit about the Grille du Roi of the Potager du Roi of Versailles !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Potager du Roi is located at 10 Rue du Maréchal Joffre just on the side of the St Louis Cathedral, can’t missed it, The reason of this post is because of the picture found on the magnificent Grille du Roi gate from where king Louis XIV entered his garden. It is one of the most beautiful in Versailles. It is one of the few original gates. The Grille du Roi has been renovated and open again for the enjoyment of all. The Grille du Roi or King’s Gate of 1681 provides access to the King’s vegetable garden. The two connected gates open onto two opposing worlds, both stamped with the royal seal: on one side the freshness of the pièce d’eau des Suisses or Swiss pond, the jewel of the Versailles estate designed by Lenôtre, and on the other the mineralized and overheated city at the start of this early summer, around the Saint-Louis Cathedral built by Mansart.

It was the gardener Jean-Baptiste de La Quintinie who, from 1678 to 1683, created this vast 9-hectare vegetable garden for Louis XIV, cultivating fruits and vegetables for the needs of the court. The potager du roi or king’s vegetable garden now displays a collection of over 750 fruit and vegetable varieties, both old and new, designed in a geometry characteristic of classical French gardens. Each of the sixteen squares is lined with summer, autumn, or winter pear trees. The Bon Chrétien pear is the fruit that the Most Christian King offers to ambassadors. The high walls of the terraces are covered with muscat grapes. Passages open onto outdoor gardens planted with apricot, azeroli, cherry, fig, peach, pear, apple, and plum trees trained as dwarf trees or espaliers. Louis XIV’s favorite fruit was the fig, grown in espaliers or in boxes brought in during the winter in the Figuererie, designed by Mansart. This was the first royal vegetable garden and then the site of the School of Horticulture in the 19C, the King’s Vegetable Garden now houses the École nationale supérieure du paysage or the National School of Landscape Design, which teaches the art and techniques of gardening and landscaping.
