Curiosities of Marly le Roi !!!

Lots of history here, and lots of memories visiting and riding once living in Versailles. It has been a while and perhaps nostalgic will bring out more . This have written a post before on the museum, but like to tell you more on Marly le Roi, in the Yvelines dept 78, Île de France region of my belle France. This post of course, will be in my black and white series,no pictures, Therefore, here is my take on curiosities of Marly le Roi !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.

Known since the Middle Ages, the Grande Rue was named “Rue de Marly” in Louveciennes (see post) in the 16C. The main street of the village of Marly-le-Roi, and later of the Vieux Marly district, it is characterized by the presence of numerous houses in their original form, dating mainly from the 16C to 18C. Nicknamed “the very steep mountain” by Louis XIV, the Grande Rue was paved in 1690. Within this beautiful complex, where commerce has also long been present, a few addresses deserve special attention, These are at no, 6, the birthplace of Joseph Pellerin, born on April 28, 1684, Intendant General of the French naval forces and the father of numismatics, At No. 18: old half-timbered house, At no. 19/21: 17-18C mansion. At no. 23, the private mansion of Louis XIV’s carpenter, Jacques Mirel, built in 1682. At no. 27, the outbuildings of the former mansion of the Governor of Île-de-France, François-Joachim-Bernard Potier, Duke of Gesvres. At no. 46, the mansion of the Count of Toulouse, dating from the early 18C. Demolished before the French revolution, it was rebuilt in 1816 by Anne-Elisabeth Racine, widow of the Academician and State Councilor, Jean Devaines. At no. 44: an old house from the 16-17C.

The Château du Verduron or Château des Sphinx is due to Louis Blouin, first valet of King Louis XIV between 1704 and 1715, as well as to Victorien Sardou, French playwright and former mayor of Marly-le-Roi. The castle was then apparently sold in the 2010s to Mr.Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Emir of Qatar and owner of PSG football/soccer team,

Since January 1, 2009, the 53 hectares of the Domaine de Marly, have been placed under the responsibility of the Public Establishment of the Palace, Museum, and National Estate of Versailles. The remaining 44 hectares of the park are managed by the French National Forestry Office (ONF). In April 2022, the Domaine de Marly was awarded the “Remarkable Garden” label by the Ministry of Culture. The Domaine National de Marly is open to the public daily. The gardens surrounding the Musée du Domaine Royal de Marly (see post) are a true landscaped masterpiece. Designed by the renowned landscape architect André Le Nôtre, the gardens are laid out in the classical French style, characterized by geometric parterres, fountains, nearly 150 statues, and shaded paths. The royal gate and the gates of the old château, such as the Porte d’honneur and the Porte du Phare, protect access to the estate. And one pedestrian entry chemin des Deux Portes (see pic)
