This is again another dandy monument in my eternal Paris. I have done quite a bit of walking in Paris, and never stop amazing me of its abundance of architecture and historical sights that not only are known but also unknown to most. This is another beauty that needs to be seen more, me think ; glad to have found new pictures in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me, Therefore, here is my take on the Church Notre Dame de Grâce de Passy of Paris !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.
The Church Notre-Dame-de-Grâce de Passy is located at 10 rue de l’Annonciation in the quartier of Muette and the 16éme arrondissement of Paris. The Rue de l’Annonciation is 315 meters long, it begins at 46, rue Raynouard and ends at 3, place de Passy It is served by line 9 at La Muette metro station and line 6 at Passy metro station. The station on Avenue du Président-Kennedy on line RER C is located near the southern part of the street. It is named after the church of Passy, which is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin, This street in the former village of Passy was formed in 1856, but which seems to be much older ; it took its current name by a decree of February 26, 1867, In 1666, Claude Chahu, Lord of Passy, had a first chapel built at his own expense. In 1672, after his death, his widow, Christine de Heurles, obtained the erection of the chapel of Passy, which until then depended on Notre-Dame d’Auteuil, into a parish. Her portrait in widow’s costume is in the sacristy of the church. The church, first called Notre-Dame de l’Annonciation, became Notre-Dame-de-Grâce de Passy. At the time, it had only one nave and a side chapel dedicated to the Virgin.
In the exterior, the Church Notre-Dame-de-Grâce de Passy features a columned porch whose tympanum is decorated with a stone bas-relief of the Annunciation, painted in 1859, and above it, a 17C stone statue of the Virgin and Child. The church was enlarged decades later, in several stages, first from 1846 to 1849 and then from 1856 to 1859. The first stone was laid on November 3, 1846. Only the nave pillars remain from the original church. A small bell tower, built in 1846, houses the bell, which dates from 1763. The intervention of the 1850s included the construction of the chapels of the Sacred Heart and the Holy Virgin. The sacristy was also enlarged in 1872. The new church reopened for Christmas 1996, it was inaugurated on February 22, 1997 by Cardinal Lustiger, Archbishop of Paris.

In the interior of the Church Notre-Dame-de-Grâce de Passy is composed of three naves, the two lateral ones of which extend around the choir to meet at the chevet, in front of an apsidal chapel. There is no vault but a simple ceiling. The decoration of the choir was painted in oils on the wall between 1847 and 1850. Represented from left to right in front of and above the choir are: The Prophecy of Isaiah; Adam and Eve expelled from Paradise; The Annunciation; The Sacrifice of Isaac; The Exit from the Ark ;the prophet Daniel in the vision of the evening sacrifice. At the top of each of these scenes, within the decorative frame, are the symbols of the Virgin Mary’s Virginity: the mystic rose, the ivory tower with image of Solomon’s throne, the Ark of the Covenant, the Tower of David, and Aaron’s rod. In the choir are the marble altar dating from the time of king Charles X and a statue of Notre Dame de Grâce of Passy. The carved wooden lectern originally belonged to the pulpit. Around the choir are the statues of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Curé d’Ars, Saint Therese of Lisieux, Saint Anthony of Padua, and Saint Vincent de Paul in larch wood.

In the Chapelle du Sacré-Cœur or Chapel of the Sacred Heart, there is a large stained-glass window depicting the coronation of the Virgin. Murals depict the consecration of the parish to the Sacred Eucharistic Heart of Jesus in 1897. Overlooking the marble altar is the gilded bronze cross from the old high altar. The center of the chapel is occupied by the new baptistery, composed of a basin and bronze sculptures.
In the Chapelle de la Sainte-Vierge or Chapel of the Blessed Virgin you see several paintings such as the Annunciation by Nicolas Delobel for the royal and parish church of Passy. Commissioned by King Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour, who often stayed at the neighboring Château de la Muette and attended Mass in Passy. This painting adorned the high altar until 1847, before being placed in the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin. The Crowning with Thorns by Luca Giordano: it was included in the exhibition of masterpieces from the churches of Paris in 1946. A copy of Titian’s The Entombment, the original of which is in the Louvre Museum, was placed in the chapel in 1864. A copy of Nicolas Poussin’s The Rape of Saint Paul, the original of which is in the Louvre Museum, was placed in the chapel in 1876. A copy of The Apotheosis of Saint Augustine by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino, a painter of the Bologna school, was placed in the chapel in 1875.
The Great Organ was built by the Merklin workshops in 1905. It was placed on the gallery. On December 21, 1952, actress Brigitte Bardot and director Roger Vadim performed there. marry (even if in his Memoirs, the latter is mistaken in indicating the church of Auteuil).
