This is Le Pouliguen !!!

Here I am again on my road warrior ways in the neighbor Loire Atlantique old Bretagne, This is heaven with so many and long coast and pretty towns alongside; another town passed by and finally came into city center. There are so many do not think will see them all in my lifetime !! Anyway, I keep on trying and besides some familiar ones, I dwell into new ones such as Le Pouliguen. Let me give you my take on this is Pouliguen !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The village of Le Pouliguen is located in the Loire-Atlantique department no. 44, in the Pays de la Loire region of my belle France. It is part of the Guérande region, one of the traditional regions of Brittany. It is a seaside resort on the Côte d’Amour, (love coast) renowned for the fishing and marina it shares with the neighboring resort of La Baule.(see posts), It is 4 km from La Baule-Escoublac, 6 km from Batz sur Mer, 8 km from Guérande, 21 km from Saint Nazaire, 83 km from Nantes, and 107 km from my current home.

The Church Saint Nicolas replaces a 17C church that was located on the site of the current market halles, the church was built from 1860, assigned to worship in 1864 but completed only in 1896. It is in neo-Gothic style 13C. The church has no transept and has three naves. The stained glass windows are mostly from the 19C.

The statuary presents remarkable old elements such as the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament, a gilded wooden statue of the Virgin Mary (1629), two gilded wooden reliquaries, a deacon and a Roman soldier (18C), – Baptismal font: wooden statue of Saint Nicholas (1630), group representing the baptism of Jesus (18C). Two contemporary works a Christ in Glory, in the choir, and Saint Joseph and Jesus as an adolescent, apprentice carpenter.

In 2017, the church welcomed a new organ, it can be described as a true “masterpiece”; a work of art that can be seen and heard.. In terms of design, its architecture, resolutely modern, draws sails of boats, slightly curved by the wind, recalling the maritime dimension of Pouliguen. In terms of music, its Franco-Flemish aesthetic makes it a polyphonic instrument. It will therefore be able to play music from the 17-18C and contemporary works from the 20-21C.

Other things to see here with more time are the protohistoric camp of Penchâteau ,a Celtic oppidum located on the seaside on the point of Penchâteau to the south of the village of Pouliguen. The Pouliguen train station was opened on May 11, 1879 , The Bernard-Boesch museum at 35, rue François-Bougoüin, but its management falls to the town of La Baule-Escoublac. This is a Breton-style building, located facing the sea, on the bay of Pouliguen, opened its doors on May 9, 2014. Bernard Boesch’s legacy contains nearly 1,400 of his paintings in various techniques, ranging from oil painting to watercolors and drawing. The Penchâteau Chapel, It contains fairly old statues and bas-reliefs; The Penchâteau Cross, in front of the chapel;

A bit of history I like tell us that during the Middle Ages, the current territory of the village of Le Pouliguen came under the medieval parish of Batz-sur-Mer. One of the first writings mentioning Le Pouliguen is an investigation report from August 25, 1561. Before the French revolution, the village was a coastal shipping port for exporting salt to Europe. Also a port for fishing for sardines, trawls and traps. In the 17C, the village had shipyards. Le Pouliguen became a branch of the parish of Batz-sur-Mer in 1805, then an independent parish in 1820. The Great War or WWI, the Maison Saint-René, a rest home for religious, was transformed into a convalescent hospital and welcomed around thirty soldiers in 1915. In WWII, in 1941, nazis troops requisitioned schools and a number of villas. At the end of the war, due to the existence of the Saint-Nazaire pocket, the nazis occupation continued in Le Pouliguen as in all the towns near the estuary for nine months, from August 1944 to May 11, 1945.
