The Church Saint Germain de Charonne of Paris !!!

I am taken you back to Paris, yes a never ending story, The eternal city never stop amazing me of its beauty and things to see even if worked in it for almost 10 years while visiting zillion times living nearby in Versailles, Once again, found me older pictures in one cd rom that should be in my blog, These are wondertful architecture gems glad to have them here for you and me. Therefore, here is my take on the Church Saint Germain de Charonne of Paris !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Church Saint Germain de Charonne the only one in Paris (other than St Pierre de Montmartre) that still has a cemetery,  We know the church was renovated in the 15C , the cemetery is call de Charonne. The church is located at 4, Place Saint-Blaise in the Père-Lachaise neighborhood or quartier at the edge of the district of Charonne. A few 13C vestiges as large pillars of the tower to elegant architecture, from the 15C and 18C for the most part. Before 1860, date of attachment to Paris, it was the parish church of the ancient village of Charonne, of which it constituted the heart with rue Saint-Blaise. According to tradition, around 430, Saint Germain, then bishop of Auxerre, would have met a young girl from Nanterre, the future patron of Paris, Sainte Geneviève. Legend has it that the church was erected by the inhabitants of the place at the site of a small oratory in memory of this meeting.

Also deserves to be visited for its cemetery, since it is one of the last intramural churches to have one since the municipal decree reducing the presence of cemeteries in the city for health reasons. Built on an unstable layer of clay, the church has encountered stability problems. It is also since 2016 only, after years of work, that we can visit it again! During these works, archaeological excavations were carried out and allowed the discovery of more than 420 skeletons were thus counted. Some of which dating goes back over 1000 years, Sometimes they were accompanied by funeral objects such as funeral ceramics (incense smoking room) dating from the 13C; fibulae or rings (one in vermeille silver with oval glass kitten); A thick dice in thick sheet of copper metal, as we could find today. An earring rod in copper alloy with incised decor, decorated with opalin white glass pellet; and 7 pendant crosses.

The Church Saint Germain de Charonne was made famous in the last scene of the film Les Tontons Flingueurs on the marriage-scene where we see the environment of the Saint-Blaise square as well as the interior of the church; In the kneeling Tontons scene, the left part of Joseph-Benoît Suvée portrait, the meeting of Saint Germain and Sainte Geneviève, at the bottom.
