Paris is full of secret places, testimonies of the history of the city. Discovering them helps to better understand the past of it. Take the covered passages of Paris, for example. In the 19C, thanks to Baron Haussmann’s grand urban transformation plan, the city had more than 70! Let me give some definition ; what is a passage? Well best describe as a private lane open to the public, a shortcut between several lanes, whether it is covered or not. A pedestrian space, the passage can house both commerce and housing. Only the abundant decoration and the luxury of the shops differentiate a gallery from a passage. Today, the covered passages and their timeless charm have won back the hearts of Parisians who crowd alongside those that have been tastefully restored. While many of them have disappeared as the city has evolved, many other passages have survive. Read on some of my tales of those present in the beautiful City of Paris.

The Galerie Véro-Dodat located at 19 rue Jean-Jacques-Rousseau / 2 rue du Bouloi ,1er arrondissement. From 1966 to 2004, the whole of Paris ran to the shop of Robert Capia (French actor and antique dealer). In 2018, Parisians discovered an equally spectacular store there: that of Christian Louboutin.

The Galerie Véro Dodat is located a stone’s throw from the Louvre Museum, On the floor, a beautiful marble paving with black and white rhombuses gives the gallery a sense of depth. The ceiling features a beautiful glass roof and engravings. Since its creation in 1826, the gallery has been home to many chic boutiques: deco, furniture, art, Louboutin shoes… If your finances allow it, you can buy beautiful things here!

In 1826, two butchers, Vero and Dodat, decided to build a gallery between the streets of Bormo and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. It is part of the set of passages born in the immediate environment of the Royal Palace, from which they borrowed the name of “gallery”. It creates an illusion of depth thanks to the diagonal frame of the slabs in black and white marble on the ground and the continuous facade of shops. Alfred de Musset frequented for some time these places where he came to see the famous actress Rachel who lived there.
