The Caryatids and Atlantes of Paris !!!

I am taken you back to Paris, yes a never ending story, The eternal city never stop amazing me of its beauty and things to see even if worked in it for almost 10 years while visiting zillion times living nearby in Versailles, Once again, found me older pictures in one cd rom that should be in my blog, These are wondertful architecture gems glad to have them here for you and me. Therefore, here is my take on the caryatids and atlantes of Paris !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

Combining history and architecture, the caryatids are among the most beautiful decorations of buildings or palaces. A singular ornament used for centuries, the origin of which remains today mysterious. Many caryatids are visible in Paris, from the most classic to the most original. Sets that Parisians meet every day, sometimes even without knowing it, and remind us that you always have to look up to make pleasant discoveries! Combining sculpture and architecture, they greatly interested the architects of the Renaissance and the 19C, In Paris the largest caryatid is located on rue de Turbigo, in the 3éme arrondissement. But it is especially with the Wallace fountains that Parisians meet them most often! We speak of caryatids when a statue representing a woman acts as a column on a building. In the same way, we speak of Atlanteans for a masculine statue that serves as a support for a wall.

I found me some nice older pictures in cd rom vault and show some interesting caryatids so they should be in my blog for you and me, These are some:

In architecture, a caryatid (or caryatide) is a statue, often feminine, serving as a support for a load. It makes it possible to replace with nobility, style, and creativity columns, pilasters (pillars engaged in a wall) or any other architectural element. First used as a colonnades, they gradually invested the facades to decorate porches, balconies and windows. A caryatid, literally “female karyes”, named after a city of Laconia, is a statue of women, often dressed in a long tunic, supporting an entablature on her head. Thus replacing a column, a pillar or a pilaster, the caryatids appear essentially on the ion buildings. The name refers to those which appear on the Erechtheion Baldaquin, on the Acropolis of Athens. The Atlante is a male variant of the caryatid. One of the most beautiful, and older examples of this element of construction and decoration is at the Acropolis of Athens, more precisely at the temple of erechtheion, built in 406 BC.
