Hope you enjoy the post as I.
The ghosts of Trianon or Versailles designated a lived experience in 1901 in the gardens of the Petit Trianon by two English women who considered it as paranormal. Although parapsychologists had doubts about the authenticity of their supposed retrovision, their book entitled « An Adventure », published in 1911 from the start, experienced a certain success and became an element of the legend of Versailles and Marie-Antoinette, in particular in the English -speaking world. They counted among the pioneers of female higher education in Great Britain and published their adventure under a pen name; Their real identity was only revealed when they died. Charlotte Anne Muberly, known as Annie Muberly, Pen name: Elisabeth Morison, and Eleanor Frances Jourdain, pen name: Frances Lamont.
We are on August 10, 1901 and while visiting ,they were lost by looking for the Petit Trianon, They saw on the edge of the road two men carrying a long coat and a tricorne, with handbags, which indicate their way; Gardeners, they think. Arrived near a cottage, Eleanor Jourdain notes inside a very young girl aged 12 to 13 and a woman; Both wear a outdated suit. Finally, they arrive at a Chinese pavilion that they take it for the temple of love. It was then that another man, tall and beautiful, curly hair under a wide -edge hat, goes into a gale wrapped in a black cape; He stops and serves them a layer of which they understand only one thing: you have to turn right. The visitors arrive near a small house with enclosed shutters. On the lawn, Annie sees a woman drawing wearing a particular style dress, a damn green and a white hat; The woman looks up and again Annie feels an unpleasant impression. The two women arrive up to the next house. A door opens, comes out a young man who gives them the impression of being a servant. They want to apologize, thinking of being on private property, but the man leads them to the nearby Petit Trianon where they are suddenly surrounded by a wedding. The bridge in the picture is where they notice the ghosts sort of and it is deep in the forest behind the gardens of the Petit Trianon.

A few days later, Miss Muberly, still in the grip of the impression of anxiety and unreality of Versailles, in fact that Miss Jourdain asking her if she does not have the impression that the places are, in any way sort, “haunted”. Eleanor confirms her impression of discomfort during the visit. The fact that only Eleanor saw the woman and the little girl and that only Annie saw the designer trouble them. Miss Muberly, precisely, saw a portrait of Marie Antoinette by Wertmüller; The queen seemed strangely resembling, for the face and clothes, to the woman of the lawn. She inquires with a French woman who confirms that rumors have long been running on the presence of the ghost of Marie-Antoinette in Versailles. Miss Jourdain returned alone to Versailles in 1902. The places seem different to her; She once again visited the Petit Trianon area in 1904. During their research, they think they remember ,the presence of a plow which did not exist in 1901, as well as a bridge that they had crossed and which disappeared (not really still there see pic), They discover that the “gardeners” wore a costume similar to that of the Queen’s Swiss guards and that the door from which the servant has come out for a long time; They identify the man with a poisoned face as the count of Vaudreuil.
The hypothesis of the two protagonists of the case was that they had had access to reliquates of memory left by Marie-Antoinette during days particularly loaded with emotion. After exchanges with the Society for Psychical Research, they finally decided to publish in 1911 the story of their visit, presented as research, under the names of Elisabeth Morison and Frances Lamont. « An Adventure » (reissued in 1913 and 1924) achieved a definite success with 11,000 copies sold in 1913. The experience was discussed in The Journal of Parapsychology, The Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research, The Journal for Psychical Research In London and Proceedings of the Society of Psychical Research In London. After the publication of the book in 1911, a Crooke family, who had lived in the Versailles region from 1907 to 1909, claimed to have seen in 1908 the designer and another character in 18c costume. In 1928, two English women reported a strange meeting of the same type. In 1935, a Frenchman, Robert Philippe, would have exchanged a few words with a woman whom her parents did not see and who would have mysteriously disappeared. On May 21, 1955, a London lawyer and his wife met in the Petit Trianon a woman and two men dressed in 18C costumes.
The Les Fantômes du Trianon (ghosts of Trianon) was published in 1959 with a preface by Jean Cocteau and an introduction by Robert Amadou. The history was the subject of a program of the Impossible Tribunal entitled « The Last Rose or the Ghosts of Trianon », broadcast on February 10, 1968 as well as a film by an English John Bruce in 1981, « Miss Morison’s Ghosts », with Wendy Hiller and Hannah Gordon in the roles of the two heroines. The title of the opera of John Corigliano in 1992, « Ghosts of Versailles » is inspired by the case.
