Josselin is a castle of history and beauty, and a Canal of historic proportions, plus the quaint streets of a beautiful town. Let me tell you about the Church Saint Martin of Josselin !  Hope you enjoy the post as I The old and wonderful Church Saint Martin, became parish church by 1400. It was a dependence on the Benedictine Abbey of Marmoutier, near Tours. Founded by Martin de Tours, perhaps from 372, the abbey experienced its peak in the Middle Ages and its outbuildings extended in a good part of medieval France and to England , The church sanctuary is undoubtedly completed before 1110, when relics are transferred from Marmoutier. But the construction of the church continues in the middle of the 12C, This priory church serves as an burial place for the counts of Porhoët in the 12-13C, In the 16C, it was devolved for some time to the Protestant worship. It does not find a monastic function afterwards. josselin-ch-st-martin-afar-aug12 This Romanesque Church Saint Martin respects the essential principles of the real Benedictine plan. It is the only one, among the Romanesque churches that remain in Brittany, to reproduce this plan the apse of origin, as high as the transept, is redone with sides cut at the end of the 16C or at the beginning of the 17C. Its height is reduced , and the nave is destroyed at the end of the 18C or early 19C. There is only the long transept and the bedside remains, which gives this new church an unusual north-south orientation. To keep it a Latin cross shape, it is flanked to the west of a chapel. Inside, the apse and the absidioles are masked by wooden partitions with a glass door. We still see, the facade, the tearing of the south wall of the nave at the end of the 19C, The southern gable collapsed ,and in 1911 replaced with a new facade, pierced with a spacious loggia. It celebrate the pontifical Mass in the open air during the forgiveness of Notre-Dame du Roncier, called until the 1950s forgiveness for the ushers.
