Its Greek cross shape divides the chapel into four equal parts. In the center, four pillars support four circular arcs on which rests an octagonal dome pierced with sixteen openings. A second cupola rests on the first. berne-chapelle-sacre-coeur-front-feb23 At the top, stands a statue of the Sacred Heart of 2.60 meters. The interior houses frescoes which the chapel was closed when we arrived but was able to peek a bit inside,. The ten scenes depicted retrace the history of the chapel and explain the purpose and practices of devotion to the Sacred Heart. An architectural reduction of the Basilica Sacré-Coeur of Montmartre, this chapel is nicknamed the “Breton Montmartre”.  berne-chapelle-sacre-coeur-back-side-feb23 Other things to see in Berné are the Saint-Albaud Chapel, in a flamboyant Gothic style inspired by the Notre-Dame de Kernascléden Church (see post), depended on the lordship of Pontcallec. It was founded at the beginning of the 16C by the lords of Malestroit, who held three fairs there a year. The Château de Pontcallec, 19C, park that can be visited. Built in 1883 on the site of the former feudal residence of the lords of Pontcallec. The castle is now inhabited by the Dominicans of the Holy Spirit, who notably run the Notre-Dame de Joie children’s home. The Sainte-Anne-des-Bois Chapel, built in the heart of the woods in 1865 by the Comtesse de Brissac, then owner of the Château de Pontcallec, in gratitude for the expected birth of a daughter. It is neo-Gothic in style.
