We are in summer, and we have boundless beauties in my belle France and especially in my lovely Bretagne ! I set out again to new territories in my road warrior mode of always that took me to neighboring Ille et Vilaine dept 35, I found me new places in beautiful wonderful back country,. My idea was to see old and new so I came back , and of course, found me new places to share with the world ! Therefore, let me tell you about the Church Saint Jean Baptiste of Saint Jouan des Guérets !! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Saint-Jouan-des-Guérets is 8 km from Saint Malo, 62 km from Rennes, and 155 km from my house, The town of Saint-Jouan-des-Guérets has three islands:l’île aux Moines, l’île Harbeau and l’île Chevret. The Île aux Moines (still nicknamed Notre-Dame Island) was until the 17C occupied by the monks of the Order of Saint-Antoine, Recollets and Carmes du Guildo. We also find on the island , the vestiges of a chapel of the 15C, rebuilt around 1703 and considered frairian in the 18C.
The Church Saint-Jean-Baptiste (St John the Baptist) of neo-Roman style, The old church dated mainly from the 16C, the Chapelle du Nord was built in 1737 and was dedicated to Notre-Dame-de-la-Délivrance very revered by the sailors. The current church was built in several campaigns: the bell tower dates around 1830-1840 while the rest of the church was built between 1861 and 1866,
The first ex-voto, is a procession model, “Ave Maria”, replica of a three masts from the Compagnie Bordes de Saint-Malo around the 1880s, when it was probably made by a carpenter navy. The Maria Ave shell is made up of assembled slats. The second model is a two-masted, probably of English origin, having regard to its name: the “pilgrim”. Finally, the third ex-voto is a schooner with three-masted Terre-Neuva, the “Charles-Edmond”.This schooner is the replica of a ship built in 1924 and armed for the big fishing until 1940, the year when It will be sunk in November off the Coubre by an English submarine.

Even today, the Chapelle du Nord of the new church, devoted to Notre-Dame-de-la-Délivrance, continues to be a very-sued pilgrimage goal; the sailors are particularly coming to make wishes made at sea, and their many votive boats cover its walls. Reconstructed today, the church was blessed in 1873. It is a modern Romanesque style church, composed of three naves, transepts and apse with ambulatory, The interior especially produces a good effect and is quite richly ornamed. The master altar, in a sculpted white stone, is surmounted by a group representing the baptism of Our Lord by Saint John. In the northern transept is the new and pretty altar of Notre-Dame-de-la-Délivrance.

Some of the other things to see here are the Chapelle Notre-Dame de l’Isle. The island formed by the course of the rance river, and called Île au Moines, sometimes Notre-Dame Island, The Malouinière de la Plussinais of the 18C, and the Saint-François-d’Assise Chapel of 1727, The Malouinière de Saint Élier, or Saint-Hélier, mid-18C. Also, about 18 manors, Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis, born in 1698 in Saint-Jouan-des-Guérets and died in Basel on July 27, 1759, was a philosopher, mathematician, physicist, astronomer and French naturalist from the 17-18C who contributed in particular to the dissemination of Newton’s theories outside England. In 1935, the international astronomical union gave the name of Maupertuis to a lunar crater.
A bit of history tell us that Saint-Jouan-des-Guérets, was founded it seems by Saint Budoc ( third bishop of Dol) in the 6C, and was first mentioned in the 13C. Its church depended in the 13C of the former bishopric of Saint-Malo. The lordship of Saint-Jouan belonged in the 17C to the Le Gobien family, then to the Arthur and Sioc’han family in the 18C. This lordship had a right of high justice.
