We are in summer, and we have boundless beauties in my belle France and especially in my lovely Bretagne ! I set out again to known and new territories in my road warrior mode of always that took me to neighboring departments in the north of Brittany, I came back again to the beautiful wonderful stunning corsair City of Saint Malo !!. My idea was to see old and new so I came back to do some walk warrior trails, and of course, found me a new place to share with the world ! I have many posts on the City in my blog, but this one is a repeat visit, Therefore, let me tell you about a former convent and a marine school of Saint Malo !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The National School of the Merchant Marine in Saint-Malo at 1 rue Saint-Benoist is one of the four schools of the merchant navy in France with those of Le Havre, Marseille and Nantes. Commonly called Hydro Saint-Malo, it forms bridge and machine officers. The idea goes back to 1669 with the decision of Colbert, Minister of the Navy of Louis XIV, to create a royal hydrography school. It took its current name in 1958, the year it moved to new buildings facing the sea in Intra-Muros Saint-Malo. Since 2010, it has been a constituent component of the National Maritime School. The latest news is that the school will leave the intramuros, to settle on the Paramé campus, between the University Institute of Technology and the Lycée Maritime, After much discussions and arguments this old school site was chosen to have the maritime museum project, it will therefore be within the National Maritime School with as per several news journal will be done by 2028.
In the building was the former convent Notre-Dame de la Victoire of Benedictines founded in 1616 . King Charles IX ordered the demolition of the Château Gaillard of Saint-Malo in 1573, of which elements were used to build the convent of Benedictine nuns. The first stone was laid in 1616 and six years later, on February 27, 1622, the church was devoted by the same bishop and placed under the term of Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire in memory of the naval Battle of Lepante which in 1571 gave the victory of the Catholic armies against the Turks , In 1792, during the expulsion of the nuns, the monastery was saved from the demolition because recovered by the army. There were only 20 nuns in the convent. It became the Caserne or barracks de la Victoire and then a prison for women in 1794.

A bit of description available we have the choir of the church opening on the north side by an arcade formerly communicating with the choir of nuns assistant to the offices behind the closing grid which was returned, the bbays were restored on the side of rue de la Victoire, and all are equipped with stained glass windows evoking the dedication. The keystone bore the date of 1710. In the gallery of the chapel is a mural of the announcement to the shepherds. It only remained in the 21C a few arcades of the old cloister raised in the convent rebuilt for the National Merchant Navy School.
Fitting to have in this post. The Enclos de la Resistance et la Deportation is a commemorative garden of 573 m² having as a backdrop for a set of 17C arcades that belonged to the old Benedictine monastery. They were found in the ruins at the end of the bombings of 1944 (WWII). The enclosure of the Resistance was erected on June 18, 1957 in memory of the Malouins, who left to join General de Gaulle, in London, after his famous call on June 18, 1940 .
This sculpture represents a human body without arms drawn up in a position of suffering and supplication, the head towards the sky, In 1963, of the dirt of the former deportation camp of Buchenwald and the ashes of the martyrs are locked up in an urn deposited in the enclosure. Fourteen years later, in 1977, a second urn arrived straight from the Dachau camp.

On the occasion of the national day of the Deportees, the friends of the Foundation for the Memory of the Deportation and the Society of History and Archeology of Saint-Malo changed the name of the place. The place has become the enclosure of resistance and deportation. At the foot of the monument, the first stanza of the poem “The passion according to Ravensbrück” by Micheline Maurel , resistant deported to Ravensbrück, is registered on the plate. “I will have to remember, later, these horrible times, coldly, seriously, without hatred, but however, with frankness.Four Malouins (locals) were companions of the Liberation: Henri Cotteret, Bernard Demolins, Joseph Pecro and Joseph Pouliquen . Their name is engraved on the side of the enclosure.
