The Salon de la Guerre or war room is located north of the Galerie des Glaces. It is to the east on the Salon d’Apollon of the Grand Appartement of the king. This room was built in 1678, at the site of the large and small cabinets of Louis XIV ,aka salons of Jupiter and Saturn ; during the construction of the Galerie des Glaces. It measures about 10 meters with a side and 11 meters high at the top of the central cap. It is also more richly decorated than its similar nearby, the Salon de la Paix (see post). The frieze of the Salon de la Guerre is decorated, among other reasons, the Pelta, decorated with two rooster heads and a lily flower, ancient shield whose drawing was replaced by Jules-Clément Chaplain for the unofficial emblem French Republic (France), The decor was made from 1684 to 1687,and the ceiling had five allegorical paintings by Charles Le Brun.

The Salon de la Guerre exalts the military victories that culminated in the peace of Nijmegen. The walls are clad with marble panels adorned with six trophies and arms falls in gilded bronze. The wall on the side of the salon of Apollo is occupied by a bas-relief oval stucco representing king Louis XIV on horseback treading at his feet his enemies. This masterpiece is surmounted by two famous gilded and supported by two chained captives. Below, in the bas-relief obscuring the opening of a false chimney, Clio, Muse of the history, set for posterity the achievements of the king. The dome ceiling represents in the center of France armed, sitting on a cloud and surrounded by victories. A portrait of king Louis XIV adorns his shield. In the covings are represented his three defeated enemies: Germany on his knees, with an eagle; threatening Spain, with a roaring lion and Holland overthrown on another lion. The fourth arch represents Belloe, the goddess of War, in fury between rebellion and discord.
