The Musée du Louvre of Paris , part IV !!!

This is a love affair of many years now, even if less due to the distance. If you read my blog ,you know I am an amateur of history and architecture and tried to put a bit of them in all my posts. You have ,also, read I am friend of several wonderful properties in my belle France; one of them is the sublime Louvre museum !!! I have found me some old paper pictures of these official visits and why not now a post. Therefore, here is another effort on the wonderful amazing gorgeous of the Musée du Louvre of Paris , part IV !!! Hope you enjoy this post as I.

The cour Khorsabad presents the remains of a gigantic town built in just ten years, at the end of the 8C BC. At that time, the north of the current Iraq belonged to the powerful Assyrian Empire. King Sargon II decides to have a new capital built in Khorsabad, near Mosul. But on the death of its founder, the city loses its status as a capital. It was not until the 19C that French archaeologists rediscovered the vestiges of the site. This is how the first Assyrian museum in the world was born at the Louvre, giving birth to a brand new discipline: Eastern archeology. This is in the Aile Richelieu wing.

The salle des Caryatides is a historic room on the ground floor of the Aile Sully wing and was built in Renaissance style in the 16C. It owes its name to the four female figures sculpted by Jean Goujon in 1550 to support the rostrum of musicians. Today, the salle des Caryatides room houses masterpieces of Greek sculptures, and more particularly representations of the gods, goddesses and heroes of mythology. Some of the works presented here are in fact Roman marble copies from a Greek original bronze. This case is very frequent because very few Greek sculptures in large format bronze have reached us. This is particularly the case with the graceful Artemis with a Doe, in the center of the room. This marble dates from the 2C, and takes up a model created around 330 BC It is also called the Diane de Versailles because it has long adorned the Galerie des Glaces of the Château de Versailles.(see posts)

Originally, the Salle Rouges or red rooms were built during major work to enlarge the Louvre carried out by Napoleon III. The red and gold decor, characteristic of the splendor that the Emperor wishes to give to the museum, was produced in 1863 by the painter Alexandre Dominique Denuelle. The red color brings out the paintings where brown tones often dominate. It is first hooked there the works of the French masters of the 17C and 18C. The large formats of the 19C will make their entry until later. Jacques-Louis David, Théodore Géricault, Eugène Delacroix ,etc. The biggest names in French painting come together on these walls. The coronation of the emperor Napoleon I was named after 1806 and 1807. You can see it on the first floor of the Aile Denon wing, room 75. It is an impressive painting of a length of 9.79 meters for 6.21 meters in height. It is painter Jacques Louis David on the coronation of empereur Napoleon Ier crowning Josephine at the Notre Dame Cathedral in 1804.
