I bring you back to my lovely Bretagne. This time in the dept 35 of Ille et Vilaine and the historical city of Rennes!! I have several posts on this pretty city ,but need to tell you that is wonderful sublime to walk on it, so therefore, taking bits and pics from other posts I have decided to split and give them a post of their own, well deserve me think, Therefore, here is my take on the Palais du Commerce of Rennes, part I !! Hope you enjoy it as I.
The Palais du Commerce was built from 1885 to 1929 ; the construction was made in two phases: the western wing from 1885 to 1891 then the rest of the building from 1922 to 1929, it was south of the Place de la République , vast essentially pedestrian space that covers the Vilaine river. It is bordered by rue du Pré-Botté, by rue de Nemours and by rue du Maréchal-Joffre. The central pavilion is crossed by the passage of the Legion-of Honor. It housed in history various institutions and businesses. The Palais du Commerce is a former exchange house. The building welcomed the library, the regional school of Fine Arts or the National Conservatory of Music. A post office and the Café de la Paix have been present in the building since the first inauguration. The west wing was home to the Café de la Paix , a mecca for Rennes from the end of the 19C, it is still there under Brasserie de la Paix, where we had drinks, It also houses a telephone central in the ground floor, still dedicated to telecommunications with a post office and a telephone sales area on both sides of the central arch. The building forms a U turned north. Two wings extend symmetrically around a central pavilion. The body of the wings have 11 spans and as many arcades. The central pavilion is surmounted by a four -sided roof ending with a lantern.

In March 2018, the owner Post Immo (post office) and the City of Rennes launched an international call for projects to transform the building into an essentially commercial space ,baptized “Renaissance”, with its 17,000 m² of commercial area , In September 2021, the project was revised and the extension project is abandoned for the benefit of a redevelopment of the placette Joffre. The work is delayed and will not start until the summer of 2024 and should end in 2026,
