Ah back to you with my beloved Versailles, a city I lived for almost 10 years and had visited upteen times over the years since 1990. A hugely memorable City for me never to forget the good times there. I have found me older pictures not yet in my blog and they should be , me think, Therefore, let me tell you a bit on the magnificent Chambre du Dauphin of the Château de Versailles !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I
The chambre du Dauphin or Dauphin bedroom is located on the garden level, in the central body of the palace of Versailles, the Dauphin’s apartment is one of the most prestigious in the former royal residence. The row of the apartment is made up of increasingly rich pieces. This progression in majesty is, today, an invitation to enter the intimacy of the royal family. The three main rooms which make up the Dauphin’s apartment, and which were affected by the construction site: the bedroom, the large cabinet, the library, offer a unique perspective on the gardens. They are respectively located under the galerie des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors), the salon de la Paix (Peace Room) and the chambre de la Reine (Queen’s bedroom).

The dauphin’s bedroom, has function as well as its dimensions and decor, date from 1747, Previously, there was a smaller cabinet there, successively the Cabinet doré de Monsieur (Golden Cabinet of Monsieur) who exhibited the paintings from his collection there, then the cabinet de travail du Régent (cabinet work of the Regent) who died there in 1723. As with all the decorative work carried out during the time he was first architect to the King , from 1742 to 1775, Gabriel provided the designs for this room. According to custom, the alcove was hung with silks while the rest of the room was paneled in carved oak rechampi white and gold, that is to say with a white background and gold motifs. The Dauphin’s bed having disappeared, it was replaced by a “duchess” bed , that is to say a bed whose imperial is not supported by pillars but suspended , made around 1740 for the marquise de Créquy; its fabrics are decorated with motifs of scrolls and medallions made in petit point; the one on the backsplash represents The Sleep of the Shepherd Endymion. On the console are a terrestrial globe and an armillary sphere (1705). A portrait of the dauphine Marie-Thérèse Raphaëlle of Spain, first wife of Louis XV’s oldest son, (dauphin) hangs on the north wall.
The redevelopment of the Palace of Versailles in the 19C transformed the room, some of the decorations of which were removed, so that the walls could accommodate embedded paintings. In the 20C, the woodwork and gilding were restored, the fireplace, found in storage, was replaced and the woodwork elements reassembled. It was reopens to the public, from April 1, 2022, after several months of restoration. This major project now allows this prestigious apartment to regain all its coherence and readability. The objective of these operations was to come closer to the state of the premises known at the time of the installation of the son of Louis XV, in 1747. During the redevelopment of 1747 for the Dauphin, son of Louis by the greatest artists of the time. Jacques Verberckt carved the woodwork based on drawings by Ange-Jacques Gabriel, Jean-Baptiste Pierre painted the overdoors (works still in the collections of the Palace of Versailles which were replaced after the restoration), and Jacques Caffieri produced sculpted bronzes.
Today, the Chambre du Dauphin or Dauphin’s bedroom is one of the richest and best preserved rooms in the princely apartments with a large part of its original decorations, a masterpiece of rock art. The work was able to restore the shine to the beautifully crafted gilded paneling, which was suffering from dirt and gaps. The restoration focused on cleaning and completing the existing decorations while respecting the authentic provisions, and enhancing them by repainting the plain King white backgrounds. Sublime indeed.

The touch of red in a green room with a pale creamy yellow as a base. Very on trend. Contrasting colours and a earth tones. A little ornate for the modern bedroom, or is it? It needs a rug though as the Big Lebowski would say. A rug just brings the whole room together man…
