I am back into my best mode, road warrior! I am looking to find new areas not visited or hardly passing by for a more in depth look, and I am thrill to share it with the world! I came to Caulnes. The town is located in the department 22 of Côtes-d’Armor in my lovely Bretagne region, It is located 47 km from Rennes, 54 km from Saint Malo, and 108 km from my house. I walked around town just to see and learn in my road warrior mode ! Therefore, let me tell you about the Château Couëlan of Caulnes !! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Caulnes is a dismemberment of the ancient primitive Gallo-Roman parish of Yvignac. Caulnes (Cauno) first mentioned in 1181, It is on the Rennes – Saint-Brieuc axis of the road N12. It is ,also, serve by the TER trains Brest – Rennes – Paris line ,gare de Caulnes train station.

The Château Couëlan castle and its park in the lieu dit or place of Guitté on the D25 road 6 km from Caulnes, The first castle was built at the beginning of the 15C. There remains a surrounding building and the base of the keep. The Castle, occupied by the Republicans and the Chouans, was very damaged. The property was purchased in 1936 by Commander Dorange and his wife, who undertook its restoration, piece by piece, roof by roof, from building to building, and this continues to this day. In a 5-hectare park, numerous buildings from the 15C, 17C ; and 18C, French-style terraced garden, English-style park, vegetable garden, orchard, Large 18C bower: Yew planted under Louis XIII, 500-year-old oak, Numerous rare and centuries-old trees (purple beech, ginko biloba, American walnut, magnolia grandiflora), numerous old rose bushes, numerous and imposing clumps of rhododendrons on the edge of the Rance valley in the middle of the woods.

Other thing to see here is the Manoir du Verger ; inside, the ground floor retains Louis XVI style woodwork, as well as a large door and a fireplace with a wooden mantle, Renaissance, from a castle in the Loire. The date of construction of the manor is unknown . It was already inhabited in 1536. The construction seems to date from the 18C for the western part to the center. The castle would have been finished during the reign of King Louis XVI in the same style, Property of the Kertusso family in 1536 and until the French revolution, It is a private property and very deep into the lieu dit Verger, Others are several nice old wooden houses here such as one from the 18C, located at No. 8 route de Dinan. This house, which apparently dates from 1756, was restored in the 19C. See the houses of Barbotais (18C), Clémiclé (1710), Clos-Jeanny (1757), Gaudinais (1753), du Grand-Buisson (1714), de la Houssais (1739), and de la Ville-es-Vilandre (1734).
