The town is located in the department 35 of Ille et Vilaine in my lovely Bretagne region, It is located 45 km from Rennes, and 83 km from Vitré, and 96 km from my house. I passsed by it and saw the nice Church Saint Pierre ! Therefore, let me tell you a bit more of the Church Saint Pierre of Maure de Bretagne ! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Maure-de-Bretagne first name was Maure and changed to Maure-de-Bretagne in 1928. As of January 1, 2017, Campel and Maure de Bretagne form a single commune that no longer makes a distinction between Campel and Maure and fully identifies with Val d’Anast. The territory of Vallons de Haute Bretagne Communauté has 18 towns, including Val d’Anast.
From all antiquity, Saint Peter was the first patron of the Church Saint Pierre. John III, John IV and John V successively founded masses there. The Lord of Maure naturally belonged to this church all the rights of superiority, foundation and pre-eminence. The Church Saint Pierre was built from 1894 to 1898 and restored following a fire in 1998; it has a Romanesque door, the last vestige of the original church, like the chancel with a straight apse, belongs to the flamboyant ogival style. The old chapels having disappeared, two others were built in 1823 and 1839. Note in this church a chiming clock made by a peasant, Pierre Anquetil, in 1735, and an altar decoration, composed of six candlesticks and with a cross, all in solid silver. The brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament, granted in 1606 by Pope Paul V, was only established in the church on May 16, 1624, by Father Jouno, a Jesuit. That of the Rosary was established there in 1625 by Father Béchu, prior of the Dominicans of Dinan. Finally, the cemetery cross, which dates from the beginning of the 16C; it is made of granite, and among the figurines which decorate it are, in addition to Christ, the Blessed Virgin and Saint John, two angels swinging the censer, Saint Peter, patron of the parish, and Saint Denis. The current church retains a beautiful Louis XV altarpiece with three mirrors from the old high altar.

Other interesting monument worth coming back eventually are the Chapelle Sainte-Anne de Roppenard chapel (12C then renovated in1626-1642-1893) was redeveloped in 1901. Inside we see a group representing Saint Anne, the Virgin and the Child Jesus (16C) , The Chapelle Saint-Mathurin chapel (11C to 19C), former possession of the Saint-Melaine abbey in Rennes. Saint-Mathurin must have been founded by the Benedictines of Saint-Melaine Abbey, who owned a fief nearby; it is located in a village still called Saint-Melaine and it has just been restored. The north wall dates from the 12C. The south wall dates from 1674. The altar of the Virgin dates from the 19-20C and houses a statue of the Virgin Mary, surrounded by Saint Melaine and Saint Mathurin, The Chapelle de Roz (18C). The chapel is located in a swamp below the ruins of the old castle of Maure, must have been the private chapel of the lords of Maure. It was rebuilt in the 18C above its door it contains the remains of a Gothic calvary, and on its altar a partly broken tombstone, presenting a sword and an escutcheon with full Maurish arms. This stone is obviously all that remains of the tomb of a Maurish lord buried in this chapel; it was made into an altar stone . Next to the chapel stands a mound surrounded by a moat. Also, the Cross (15-18C) from the old Roppenard cemetery; the Roppenard fountain; the Cross of Maure or Saint-Hermin’s cross (15C-19C), located in the cemetery. Saint Hermin or Hermin was a pious solitary who lived in La Landelle, near the old castle of Maure. We can see the arms of the Maurish family of the castle of Penhoët or Penhouët (16C). The Penhouët chapel was rebuilt near this manor in the 17C, the Château du Bois au Voyer, rebuilt in the 19C on part of the site of an older castle, and the Château de la Lambardais built in 1513.
Maure-de-Bretagne comes from the abbey of Saint-Maur-sur-Loire or Saint-Maure-sur-Loire to which the ancient parish of Anast was given in the 9C. Maure(-de-Bretagne) is cited as a parish as early as 832. This parish, much larger then than today, was originally called Anast. The parish of Anast included, in addition to the parish of Maure-de-Bretagne, that of Campel, Bovel, Loutehel, Mernel, and Saint-Séglin, which at that time were only chapels. In 843, the chief Breton Anowareth of the vast primitive parish of Anast, donated it to the abbey of Saint-Maur-sur-Loire in Anjou, which founded a priory there called the priory of Saint-Maur. The name Maure seems to come from this donation. The Spanish entered Maure-de-Bretagne in 1595. during the Franco-Spanish League war,The Franco-Spanish War of 1595-1598 was a conflict between the kingdoms of France and Spain in connection with the Eighth War of Religion (1584-1598), also involving the Duchy of Savoy, an ally of Spain. The Franco-Spanish War ended with the Peace of Vervins (May 2, 1598), which shortly followed the submission of the last Leaguer, the Duke of Mercoeur, governor of Brittany (March 16, 1598) and the publication of the Edict of Nantes (April 1598), ending the civil war. On the other hand, the Franco-Savoyard War continued until the Treaty of Lyon (1601), which allowed France to annex territories belonging to the Duke of Savoy.
