Curiosities of Bain de Bretagne !

I am back into my best mode, road warrior! I am looking to find new areas not visited or hardly passing by for a more in depth look, and I am thrill to share it with the world! I came to Bain de Bretagne. The town is  located in the department 35 of Ille-et-Vilaine in my lovely Bretagne region, It is located 40 km from Rennes, and 55 km from Vitré, and  123 km from my house. I walked around town just to see and learn in my road warrior mode ! Therefore, let me tell you a bit more of my curiosities of Bain de Bretagne in my black and white series, no pictures ! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The first mention of Bain is made around the year 1040, In 1895, the name of the town of Bain ,then was changed to Bain-de-Bretagne, The parish of Bain existed from the 11C since it is mentioned in an act of 1053. Several people stayed in Bain (Bain-de-Bretagne): King Henry III of England (ally of Duke Pierre Mauclerc) on May 15, 1230, François I in 1518, Henry IV on the night of May 7 to 8, 1598, the Duchess of Berry and Napoleon III in 1840.The parish of Bain (Bain-de-Bretagne) was attacked by the Royalists in 1790 and fell into their power in 1800.

Other interesting things to see are the château de Robinais, (17-18C), château de Pomméniac (17-18C) ,and château de la Noé-Saint-Yves (1837), all private properties, The cemetery cross of Bain-de-Bretagne dates from the 15C, The top of the cross is in the shape of a quadrilobe, with on one side Christ on the cross between the Holy Virgin and Saint Mary Magdalene . The other side represents the Madonna and Child. The original base has disappeared, as well as part of the barrel. The cross is remounted on a modern shaft, with a square base. The Pomméniac mill is located on a hill at approximately 73 meters above sea level. It is already present on the first local land register in 1837.

The Notre-Dame-de-Bain Priory is mentioned for the first time in 1152; it depended on the Saint-Melaine Abbey of Rennes and is cited several times in the cartulary of this abbey. The Château de la Marzelière was built in 1340 by Guillaume de Marzelière. In 1556 King Henry II granted Pierre de Marzelière the privilege of establishing two fairs per year, one at the Saint-Lien chapel (located near the Château de la Marzelière) on Pentecost Tuesday, the other near the Château du Fretay in Pancé on November 25 (St. Catherine’s Day); In the same year he conferred upon him the Order of Chivalry, a purely honorary distinction. In 1778 the abandoned Château de la Marzelière was completely ruined. American soldiers of the 4th Armored Division, coming from Messac, liberated the town on August 3, 1944.
