The Château of Quintin !!!

I was back in my road warrior mode going up to the northern parts of my lovely Bretagne to see new towns! The search is never ending with the abundance of beauties around here. I came upon this town and it was nice again! Therefore, let me tell you about the Château of Quintin !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Quintin is located in the Côtes-d’Armor department 22, in my lovely Bretagne region, only 16 km from Saint-Brieuc, and less than an hour from my house. Strategically, the town is at the crossroads of the routes which go from Saint Brieuc  to Quimper  via  Rostrenen  on the one hand and from  Guingamp / Châtelaudren  to Lorient via  Loudéac  on the other hand. I went there on my way back on the D7 then D700 and finally the D768 roads, easy rides !

The Château de Quintin is in fact made up of two castles in the same park, in the heart of the small character town of Quintin: an unfinished 18C castle and a 17C castle, One of the nine baronies of Brittany, the lordship de Quintin was born in the 13C from the division of the Penthièvre. In 1691, Quintin was established as a duchy. The Château de Quintin is a dwelling flanked by recessed pavilions. From the 17C castle which remained unfinished, a double pavilion and the bases of two buildings set at right angles remain. A long wing of outbuildings joins together to the northwest. The 18C castle is a continuation of the 17C constructions. The foundations of the 17C castle, the richly furnished apartments of the 18C castle, the old kitchens ,including a granite vegetable garden exceptional in its size, the permanent porcelain collections , glassware, silverware, trinkets, baptism dresses and fans.

In the town itself, the unfinished fortress from the 17C, completed with a more recent residential wing, constitutes the castle of Quintin. Seat of feudal power, the castle suffered a succession of wars during the 15-16C. Only the walls and the Porte-Neuve are preserved from the medieval city, partly made up of the old tower of the Archives of the Château de Quintin. One of the last Protestant strongholds in the 17C, the castle rebuilt in the mid-17C remains unfinished. In the 18C, its outbuildings and stables were redeveloped and enlarged to form the current Château de Quintin. Steeped in history, the lordship of Quintin, then its castle, has since its origin always been preserved within the same lineage. The opening of the castle to the public in 1986 gradually allowed its gardens and interiors to be restored. Remaining unfinished during its construction in the 17C, the old house of the Château de Quintin is the subject of a very important restoration program. In 2021,with the heritage mission led by Stéphane Bern ,with the restoration of the tower of Archives and part of the ramparts The Frotier de Bagneux family is the current owner of the place since 1935.and it can be visited all year round with winter time reservation ahead.
