The Chapelle Saint Laurent des Sept Saints of Yffiniac !!!

I was back in my road warrior mode going up to the northern parts of my lovely Bretagne to see new towns! The search is never ending with the abundance of beauties around here. I came upon this town and it was nice again! Therefore, let me tell you about the Chapelle Saint-Laurent des Sept Saints of Yffiniac !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Yffiniac is located in the Côtes-d’Armor department 22 in my lovely Bretagne region. The town is on the N12 road, 7 km from Saint-Brieuc , and about an hour from my house!

The Chapelle Saint-Laurent des Sept Saints largely rebuilt in 1850, this chapel currently constitutes the main architectural and historical heritage. The choir and the transept, in the shape of a Latin cross, are the only remains of the old chapel, dating from 1681. At the beginning of the 20C, a festival was celebrated there during the pardon. Pilgrims went to the chapel to ask for healing.

The Chapelle Saint-Laurent des Sept Saints, Rue de Saint-Laurent C1, The chapel is in the shape of a Latin cross, with apse and wings with cut sides, would have been built in 1681, if we are to believe the date recorded in the stone, today above the side door. Priests estimate that the origin of the chapel dates back to the beginning of the year 1600. Under the French revolution, in 1793, it was sold as ecclesiastical lordship property. In 1833, completely in ruins, it was bought by the factory and rebuilt in 1850-1851. Saving the only chapel still standing in the town is the goal of the aptly named Friends of the Chapel. It was sold by the town to the association for the symbolic franc in 1980, before the latter sold it back ten years later. The pardon was celebrated again in 1981, after two years of work on the walls, roof and stained glass windows. Decommissioned by prefectural decree of September 1, 1977, the chapel was restored in 1986.

The Fontaine des Sept-Saints, is very the above chapel. Characterized by its niches, now copies, it housed several series of statues of saints, all victims of vandalism. Many uncertainties remain: holy healers or holy founders of the dioceses of Brittany? Saint Tugdual, Saint Méen, Saint Armel, Saint Lubin and Saint Cado are mentioned in the parish registers, then come Saint Fiacre and Saint Laurent. In 1962, mention was made of the presence in the chapel of no longer five or seven saints, but nine, including Saint Jacut and Saint Guénolé. The statues are now sheltered, in the chapel. The pedimented chapel is preceded by two square pools separated by an axial wall and delimited by two side walls. Three steps provide access to the first pool. This aedifice has seven niches, four at the bottom and three above, each of them is decorated with a representation of a Saint, present there: Saint-Armel, Saint-Aubin, Saint-Cado, Saint-Gwénolé, Saint-Jacut, Saint Méen, Saint-Tugdal also known under the surname of Saint-Pabu. Inside the Saint-Laurent Chapel, a reproduction in good condition of each of them is preserved. Every year, Pardon takes place on the 3rd Sunday of September. Everyone comes to implore the Saint who can help them heal: Saint-Armel for fevers, Saint-Jacut for fevers, Saint-Cadoc for skin diseases, etc. ……In the 15C and 16C, the pilgrimage of the seven saints, better known as the Tro Breizh (“tour of Brittany” in the Breton language), was famous and attracted crowds. Stopping at the chapel.
