I was back in my road warrior mode going up to the northern parts of my lovely Bretagne to see new towns! The search is never ending with the abundance of beauties around here. I came upon this town and it was nice again! Therefore, let me tell you about Yffiniac in the Côtes d’Armor dept 22. Hope you enjoy the post as I.
The town of Yffiniac is located in the Côtes-d’Armor department 22 in my lovely Bretagne region. The town is on the N12 road, 7 km from Saint-Brieuc as well as on the Paris-Brest railway axis. It is one of the 14 towns of the Saint-Brieuc Armor Agglomération.
Its origins date back to the Gallo-Roman period. Yffiniac, a parish attached to the county of Rennes in 980, depended on the bishopric of Saint-Brieuc from 1432. During the 15-16C, several lordships were established such as the Rostrenen family and then passed by inheritance, in 1629, to François de Vignerot, nephew of Cardinal Richelieu. His son then ceded it to René du Bouilli de Turquant, lord of Baudry. During the French revolution, the Duke of Penthièvre was the lord.
A historical event here took place on July 17, 1927, when more than 200,000 spectators gathered along the roads of Saint-Brieuc and Yffiniac to watch an automobile competition, the Florio Cup. The chosen circuit, 13 km long, formed a triangle Yffiniac – La Croix Gibat – Rue de Gouedic in Saint-Brieuc, This was won by Robert Laly, on an Aries automobile at an average of more than 96 km/h; he was ahead of Louis Wagner, on a Peugeot, Bernard Hinault, cycling champion ,and 5 times winner of the Tour de France was born in Yffiniac !
One extended trip we did not make but is worth to come back for it is the Maison de la Baie or house of the bay go to understand everything about the reserve The site is also remarkable because it is located in the heart of the bay of Saint-Brieuc, the fifth bay in the world for the amplitude of its tides. The sea can recede more than 7 km !! Three circuits marked with markers allow you to discover the Nature Reserve at any time: its marshes, its polders and its coast. The terminals refer to a descriptive booklet (3€ at Maison de la Baie) which provides information on the nature, history and sociology of the places visited. For ornithology enthusiasts, the Nature Reserve observatory, based on Pointe d’Illemont, allows you to observe birds in complete peace and quiet and from different points of view.
Other things to see here which will touch base in my next posts are Chapelle Saint-Laurent des Sept Saints, Fontaine des Sept-Saints, Saint-Aubin Church, and the Hippodrome de la Baie. One that will show here is the city/town hall or Hôtel de Ville that was done in 1911 in a pretty architectural style.
