The streets of Josselin ,part III !!!

I was on my road warrior mode again in my beautiful Morbihan and lovely Bretagne region of my belle France, I have written several post on the town, but once coming for lunch with friends and my sons needed to stop by again, Josselin is worth the detour ! Therefore, let me tell you again by the streets of Josselin , part III !!! with new pictures ! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Rue Olivier-de-Clisson is located on Place Notre-Dame and the forecourt of the Basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Roncier and, to the north, on Place de la Liberation. This street bears the name of Olivier V de Clisson, great Breton feudal lord and Constable of France, who died at the Château de Josselin. Built in the 16C, the Maison des Porches ou Morices  currently houses local artists exhibitions. A major witness to Josselin half-timbered architecture, the building  has pillars bearing a merchant’s mark and delimiting the area of a commercial porch. Only two similar structures  remain in Morbihan. The house is located at 21 rue Olivier de Clisson.

The Rue de Trente is a historical spot as well, The name of this street comes from the fight that took place in 1351 between Josselin and Ploërmel. This battle takes place within the framework of the War of Succession between the Montfort supported by the English and the Penthièvre supported by the French. Jean de Beaumanoir, captain of the defense of Josselin castle, won with thirty Franco-Bretons against Richard Bemborough with his thirty Anglo-Bretons. The victor gains control of the territory.

The Rue des Vierges presents old merchant houses dating from the 16C and recently renovated. These witnesses of the half-timbered architecture have a stone ground floor, surmounted by a cantilever in a wooden structure. This architecture will tend to disappear with the generalization of the use of stone in the 17C. It comes alongside the Basilica Notre Dame du Roncier into Place Notre Dame!

The town of Josselin was once surrounded by ramparts. This fortified enclosure had three gates: the Saint-Nicolas gate, the Lion gate and the Saint-Martin gate. Below the castle, a vestige of the old rampart remains. It has a secondary door pierced in a wall, called the “cat hole”. There is another wooden house by 2 rue des Remparts, Some houses are built by reusing stones from the ramparts, others with the use of wood which enlivens the facades. The half-timbered houses of the 16C and 17C, with their colorful facades and unique signs, give the city its charm and their number, its reputation.

At the place de la Congrégation was on this square that, according to oral tradition, the miraculous statue of Notre-Dame du Roncier was burned during the French revolution. A woman from Josselin saved a fragment of the statue from the fire, now kept in a reliquary within the basilica. One of the stained glass windows in the basilica illustrates this event.
