The citadel of Port-Louis is an impressive building, marked by the Breton history of the 16-17C. A bit of history I like tell us a first fortification project at the entrance to the harbour of Lorient was made in 1486 by the Duke of Brittany François II. However, funding was not released before the Duke’s death in 1488, and the project was shelved. The place gained importance at the time of the League Wars. The troops of the Duke of Mercoeur occupied Hennebont from September 1589 and began to attack Blavet (present-day Port-Louis) from the following month. The city did not fall until June 11, 1590 after suffering an attack by land and sea. Spanish troops, allied with the Duke of Mercoeur, arrived in Brittany on October 12, 1590 and were taken to the city to garrison there. The architect Cristóbal de Rojas began to build a fort under the orders of the governor of the place, Juan d’Aguila, at the entrance to the harbor in December and from January 1591 the two bastions of the land front began to emerge . The bastions have rounded orillons and casemated sides according to a typical arrangement of bastions built in the 16C. The Spanish continued to occupy the place until the Treaty of Vervins in 1598, and Marshal de Brissac had the citadel destroyed from August 1598 after a request to this effect from the States of Brittany. However, not everything was destroyed, and two bastions, a curtain wall, the bridge piers and the barracks were preserved. The citadel was rebuilt between 1618 and 1621, when Louis XIII decided to give Port-Louis the status of a royal city. . Until the end of WWII, it will be controlled by the Nazis from 1940 to 1945, the citadel will be used to defend the harbor, then it will be assigned to the surveillance of maritime traffic. The last soldiers left the place in 2007.

Along the garden of the Mail you will see a somber reminder of the atrocities of WWII with a monument to the 69 résistants killed by the Nazis here.
