I could had walked ,many do ,but me the road warrior took my car for a nearby ride of Bieuzy-Lanvaux of just 7 km, This is a village part of my town Pluvigner in the beautiful Morbihan dept 56 of my lovely Bretagne and in my belle France! One of the most off the beaten path areas you can find in France, but for the local Breton ,very historical. I like to tell you again with new pictures of the Church Saint Bieuzy of Bieuzy Lanvaux !! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The current Church Saint Bieuzy was founded by Michel de Rimaison , squire of King Charles IX, as in bear witness to the numerous representations of its coat of arms sculpted in several places in the church. The date of construction is known by two inscriptions, one carried on the sandpit of the choir of 1560, the other sculpted in the masonry of 1561. The architecture of the church is simple: originally with a single nave ending in a canted apse, it was gradually enlarged by the addition of a sacristy to the north of the apse and two false chapels. transept, one to the south in 1753, the other to the north in 1781; a bell tower was built at the same time.

Built on the hillside, the Church Saint Bieuzy dominates the village. On the back wall of the choir is a painting of the Holy Family. We also notice two side niches of carved wood from the 17C, which are located in the choir. On the left, the statue of Saint-Bieuzy is presented and on the right sits a Virgin and Child. Several other statues are present in the church: those of Sainte-Brigide, Notre-Dame de Lourdes, Saint-Joseph and even Sainte-Thérèse. A statue may intrigue the visitor: that of a holy knight dressed in a cloak and holding a shield but no sword. It could be Saint Michael.

Outside you will find a wall bench, a sundial and a bell tower made up of four arched bays and a polygonal spire. Next to the church are a calvary, a stele and the old cemetery. Significant work was also carried out at the end of the 19C. and at the beginning of the 20C like construction of plaster vaults on chestnut laths, construction of a gallery against the western wall, remodeling of the bays of the nave and reconstruction of the bell tower The architectural transitional style is between flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance. The two major elements of the decor are the sculpted sand pits and the three stained glass windows in the choir. Dating from 1574-1575, these three glass roofs were reworked to adapt them to the format of the bays: they probably come from the bays of the nave. They represent a Crucifixion and different scenes from the Passion. The church also presents rich furnishings partially protected as historical monuments.
In 1995, with the plaster vaults threatening to collapse, permission was given to demolish them. Since 1999, the Church Saint Bieuzy has undergone a complete restoration campaign (masonry, framework, roofing, stained glass windows), which took place in four functional sections: choir and sacristy, crossing and chapels, and nave in two campaigns. The approach chosen for the restoration of the framework was to restore the original arrangements, still partly preserved, in particular the paneled vault and one of the tie beams between the north and south sand pits. The Safeguarding of French Art provided aid of 8K€ for the repair of the nave, which ended with the reinstallation of the restored high altar. These project are still ongoing trying to preserve this historical monument and most of the time is close unless accompany by a restoration person of the Safeguarding of French Art organisation, I put the La Sauvegarde de l’Art français ,well worth their efforts : https://www.sauvegardeartfrancais.fr/la-fondation/missions/
Saint Bieuzy ,legend says that the saint was hit in the head with a knife because he did not want to interrupt his mass to cure the dogs of the Lord of Melrand of rabies. He wanted to pay one last visit to his friend Saint Gildas and stopped at Bieuzy-Lanvaux. The chapel was built in memory of his passage. Before the French revolution, the chapel was Pluvigner’s truce. In 1835, the municipal council decided to make it an annex and in 1925 it became a parish.
