Once again to one of my favorite spots in my beautiful Morbihan dept 56 of my lovely Bretagne and in my belle France, I have several posts on Quiberon of course, but, again, found me some older pictures not in my blog yet and they should, A must to visit while in the area or even coming to it alone, Let me tell you about something I should had ,the wonderful Port Maria of Quiberon !! Hope you enjoy it as I
The Port Maria is between the marine terminal ,and the Grande Plage beach (see posts) ,The green lighthouse is just up from the cinema Le Paradis at 11 Rue du Phare. Port Maria was built from the 18C until the 19C. The leading sardine port in France in the 1950s, It then had thirteen canneries, today there are only two left. It is thanks to the creation of a municipal auction in 1977 that the port still welcomes over 100 fishing boats. It is the second in Brittany after Lorient (see post)and is now computerized. The Port Maria is home to fishing activities and the transport of passengers and goods to the islands of Belle-île, Houat and Hoëdic. It welcomes more than 100 fishing boats, trollers, gillnetters, trappers, trawlers and dredgers, which come daily unload their fish and shellfish at the auction, for 38 approved buyers.

The Phare de Port-Maria lighthouse is set back from the shore and is now among the constructions at the end of the Côte Sauvage. It is a cylindrical tower in smooth masonry painted white, with a corbelling in exposed stones, and a lantern painted green. It is attached to a house on two residential levels. The lighthouse is automated. Unguarded, it cannot be visited. The construction of this lighthouse was completed in 1895. One of its colorful sectors covers the Birvideaux plateau which was not marked out at the time. Originally, it also served as the rear light of the entry line to the port of Port-Maria. It was then coupled with a small light, built in 1891, located at the end of the mole, at the entrance to the port. Following work carried out at the port in 1952, this light was moved to the end of the new breakwater, and this alignment was abandoned. The slightly frustoconical tower, with a height of 24.80 meters, or 28.10 meters above sea level, is attached to the north face of a rectangular house, which replaced the small original building in stones.

The Plage de Port Maria beach is located next to the Grande Plage (on the right) at the port. This beach is more of a playground for children, swimming is not recommended since we are in the port…For those looking for a little space at the height of the season when the different beaches of Quiberon are invaded. Ideal for playing. The beach is located on the right of the boarding dock for Belle-Ile.
