The town of Douarnenezis located at the bottom of the Bay of Douarnenez, and is part historically of theCornouaille. For info it is only 120 km from my house, I was just there again for the memories of always now coming back with my sons and dog Rex, Many beautiful sights but we came up with the main ones me think, Therefore , let me tell you about the markets of Douarnenez !!! Do read my several posts on the town in my blog, Hope you enjoy the post as I.The beautiful wonderful Douarnenez in neighboring dept 29 of Finistére in my lovely Bretagne and in my belle France.
The halles or covered market were built in Douarnenez in 1871 at the site of a previous building that had become too cramped; Built on the floor, they were raised one story at the beginning of the 1930’s decade to set up the festive hall which opened in 1934; It was decorated by six painters who painted frescoes there. The painters were Abel Villard, Robert Paulo Villard , Lionel, Jim Sévellec, Gaston Paul, Maurice Le Scouëzec, who made 16 oils on toile, and were completed in 1938 It is open every mornings from Mondays to Saturdays.

The Halles of Douarnenez has a nice story, For years, vegetable, fruit, fish and meat sellers have set up shop in small covered market halls on the “grande rue” (at the current intersection between rue Sébastien Velly and rue Voltaire). Built in 1816, these halles were in danger of ruin. Also in 1870, the idea came to fruition to build new ones more suited to the wealth of the city. This old square, the center of the locals, hosted the grain market and a small daily market. Ten houses were demolished after expropriation. The surrounding streets are widened. In short, it’s a revolution in the heart of the city. The latest renovations were done in Jan/Feb 2023 !
