The town of Douarnenezis located at the bottom of the Bay of Douarnenez, and is part historically of the Cornouaille. For info it is only 120 km from my house, I was just there again for the memories of always now coming back with my sons and dog Rex, Many beautiful sights but we came up with the main ones me think, I end this road warrior trip with fishing and the glorious sea that my father Elio came up when a child, love the ports here I am in heavens !!! Therefore , let me tell you about the Cale à Bateaux and the Port de Rosmeur of Douarnenez !!! Do read my several posts on the town in my blog, Hope you enjoy the post as I.The beautiful wonderful Douarnenez in neighboring dept 29 of Finistére in my lovely Bretagne and in my belle France.

The Port du Rosmeur fishing port in Douarnenez welcomes a local flotilla of bolinchers. Its specialization in blue fish (sardines, horse mackerel, anchovies, mackerel) is characterized by a very high proportion of products sold outside the auction. It has a large basin that can accommodate a large capacity flotilla, but also a smaller space containing two pontoons on the site… Leisure fishing is still tolerated on the pier of the Port du Rosmeur has been developed in order to enhance these historic quays of the town of Douarnenez. It’s adorable port nestled in the heart of one of the largest bays in Brittany, is home to charming houses with colorful facades.

Port du Rosmeur is around the old port quays of the Grand Port and Petit Port overlook the Bay of Douarnenez and towards the Crozon Peninsula (see post). A well-placed location for photos, strolls and afternoons on the terraces. Built in 1968, the Rosmeur slipway structure is used as a landing slipway for fishing: local canoes and coastal sailors frequent this slipway daily , notably 5 trollers and gillnetters, and around ten others seasonally to which are added those from neighboring ports. The hold is also used for the water outlet of ships and is used by Pen Ar Bed ships when they are stationed in Douarnenez. Behind the quays extends an old fishing district whose alleyways leading down to the sea offer a journey through time. The Grand Bassin has plenty of space for fishing and the Petit Bassin for boats loading and off loading bringing the wonderful fish etc. The quay here is 170 meters long and 5 meters wide perpendicular to the median which separates the South basin (small) from the North basin (big). The Port due Rosmeur fishing port with the fish market is managed by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Quimper Cornouaille, inaugurated in 1958 in its current form;

The L’Abri du marin or sailor’s shelter built by Jacques de Thézac and which was the headquarters of the magazine “Chasse -Marée”, You have the painter Henri Lemoine and the famous portrait of “Douarnenez, sur le port du Rosmeur « , from around 1900
The monumental door of the ice house or Porte de la Glaciére along the quays of the port of Rosmeur. It dates from 1890 and is the only vestige of the place where the ice loaded on board fishing boats for preserving fish was manufactured and loaded. This door bears an inscription in memory of the free French embarked on the Trébouliste on June 18, 1940. For the wonderful history, The Trébouliste is the lobster boat used to transport the 115 students from the air force flight schools of Le Mans and Vannes who left France to join England on June 19, 1940, in order to respond to the Call of June 18, 1940 from General de Gaulle, Le Trébouliste reached England on June 21, The student aviators of Trébouliste were, with the 18 aviators who left from Saint-Jean-d’Angély, the first French people to join De Gaulle in England.

And an anecdote I like to tell you here, If kouign-amann is a traditional Breton pastry, it is less known that it was in Douarnenez that the recipe was developed at the end of the 19C. Look out for shops bearing the “real kouign-amann de Douarnenez” label and treat yourself! This cake is eaten the day it is made.
