The streets of Josselin, part II !!!

Now this is a wonderful medieval town just 45 minutes by car from my house and we love it. It has a wonderful castle and many nice monuments and medieval streets sublime. However, some of the streets are gorgeous way to walk it just for the architecture and history that embrace them. Do see my other post on the streets !  I like to tell you again on  the streets of Josselin, part II !!!   Hope you enjoy the post as I

The city of Josselin is in my beautiful Morbihan department 56,of my lovely Bretagne, and in my belle France. It islocated between the Rennes/Lorient Expressway  (N24) and the Nantes-Brest Canal on the Oust river. Also, 44 km from Vannes, 73 km from Lorient and 81 km from Rennes.

The Rue Olivier-de-Clisson is located on Place Notre-Dame and the forecourt of the Basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Roncier and, to the north, on Place de la Liberation. This street bears the name of Olivier V de Clisson, great Breton feudal lord and Constable of France, who died at the Château de Josselin. You have remarkable buildings here such as at the at the corner of Place Notre-Dame: Basilica of Notre-Dame du Roncier; no 1: 15C house, no 4: 18C hotel, no 19: House of Eustache Roussin, master blacksmith from Versailles and native blacksmith from Josselin. He made the pulpits of the Notre-Dame du Roncier basilica and the Saint-Cornély church in Carnac, as well as several choir screens including that of the Saint-Pierre Church in Lanouée and the screens of the castles of Versailles or Trégranteur …etc, no 21: Maison Morice, from the 16C and at no 27: 16C house.

The Rue de Trente is a historical spot as well, The name of this street comes from the fight that took place in 1351 between Josselin and Ploërmel. This battle takes place within the framework of the War of Succession between the Montfort supported by the English and the Penthièvre supported by the French. Jean de Beaumanoir, captain of the defense of Josselin castle, won with thirty Franco-Bretons against Richard Bemborough with his thirty Anglo-Bretons. The victor gains control of the territory. Nowdays, the city of Josselin has decided to pedestrianize rue des Trente on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 20h to 23h and Sundays from 13h to 23h, from July 15 to September 15, in Summer.  You look up here for 5 rue des Trente, a house dated 1563 with date and V R monogram engraved in a cartouche located on the lower plate; 18C interior distribution and return wing; reworked in the 20C. Front elevation in wood section; posterior elevation, return wing and gable in shale rubble, Also, the No 7, rue des Trente done in 1624, aka Louyo Piechel house, The 34 Rue des Trente house dated between the end of the 15C and the beginning of the 16C. Two-story main building and attic. Half-timbered facade on cantilevered beams forming consoles and connected by molded runners, superbe !

On the Rue de la Fontaine you will find by the free parking next to the castle , The Notre-Dame-du-Roncier Fountain, dating from 1675, is probably older. The statue, removed from the place, would have returned there in a miraculous way. Miraculous healings are said to have taken place there in the 17C and in 1728 ,the fountain was frequented because its waters were reputed to cure epilepsy, It occupies an area of 50 m2, with a vault decorated with a statue of the Virgin and Child, and a triangular pediment adorned with the coat of arms of the Rohans and features a large cross. Today, it is still a place of pilgrimage.
