Therefore, let me tell you more of the Church Notre Dame of Cholet, part II !! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

I am talking about the Notre Dame Church of Cholet. It is right in city center/downtown of the city at the parvis Jean-Paul-II , and surrounded by the old town and a great square Travot. The short end of it tells us that here was a castle and the now Church was just a chapel of the castle, then the parish Church was built and over and over again on the same spot the current Church occupy today. This region has suffered greatly in the 19C due to the voracious French revolution, that only destroyed many religious buildings but murdered many of the folks in the area of the Vendée or wars of the west as they were called. The people here has taken to rebuilt these religious buildings , and the current church was initially built between 1854 and 1887. It is considered one of the best work and preserved of buildings from the trouble 19C in the region.

A first chapel of the Notre-Dame priory was first built around the 11C on the site of the current church. Around 1185, the chapel became a parish church. In the 15C, the chapel of the monks of the priory was built: it was small, unvaulted, with very narrow aisles, and an exterior clock. During the period of the French revolution, it fell into disrepair due to lack of maintenance and repair. It was closed to the public in 1812, then demolished to be rebuilt in 1814 in the style of Poitevin churches, with a bell tower forming a lantern tower above the high altar. It was completed in 1820. The church becoming quite small, and the construction of a fourth church was envisaged. The work was undertaken in the second half of the 19C with a choir with five chapels and a transept in the neo-Gothic style of the 13C.

Two sculptures by the artist Étienne-Hippolyte Maindron (19C) were installed there in the 1980s in the nave of the Notre Dame Church. There is also a 17C painting, the Triumph of the Virgin, and a 19C altar.
