If you have been reading my blog and thank you for it doing it since Nov 2010; then you know my sentimental attachment to Honfleur. A city gear to the ocean and fishing and the Calvados dept 14 of Normandy, and my belle France, I have several posts on it in my blog and they are all special to me. I had to go there again for a personal duty that I had to do, put the ashes of my father at sea as were my mother and wife. Honfleur is special and its churches are the soul that rings with history, traditions, architecture ,and just quant neighborhoods of old and today. Just lovely for a walk, see ,do eat, drink and be merrier for life’s given.Let me tell you again about the Church Saint Leonard of Honfleur !! Hope you enjoy the post as I.
However, worth to tell you this is a town towards the ocean of great sailors. In 1503, Paulmier de Gonneville ventured to Brazil. A century later, explorer Samuel Champlain left the Norman port for Canada where he founded the city of Québec. Honfleur is very international, and the second most visited site in Normandie behind just MSM !!!
The Church Saint Leonard consists of a large nave with two aisles and a choir completed by a three-sided bedside. The façade is of flamboyant Gothic style and only surviving part of the old Gothic Church. The main gate is considered one of the most beautiful expressions of flamboyant Gothic. There are also some rebirth elements. The majority of the Church was burned by the Huguenots (protestants) at the time of the wars of Religion in the 16C. Which explains the peculiar shape of the dome tower, rare in Normandy, but which evokes those that are encountered in eastern France.
Leonard was a young man of the court of Clovis and patron saint of prisoners. The ancient church of Saint-Léonard existed on the site of this one in 1186. Located in the heart of the suburb, of the same name, it was rebuilt at the end of the 15C and the beginning of the 16C. The large octagonal bell tower dates from 1760. Its upper part is decorated with elegant bas-reliefs representing musical instruments. The church is oriented and elongated , two buildings compose it. The bedside is polygonal. The main facade rises on three levels, with massive, sculpted buttresses framing it. A tympanum surmounts the portals.
