If you have been reading my blog and thank you for it doing it since Nov 2010; then you know my sentimental attachment to Honfleur. A city gear to the ocean and fishing and the Calvados dept 14 of Normandy, and my belle France. I have several posts on it in my blog and they are all special to me. Let me tell you again about the Vieux Bassin of Honfleur !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.
However, worth to tell you this is a town towards the ocean of great sailors. In 1503, Paulmier de Gonneville ventured to Brazil. A century later, explorer Samuel Champlain left the Norman port for Canada where he founded the city of Québec. Honfleur is very international, and the second most visited site in Normandie behind just MSM !!!
The Vieux Bassin or old basin is a port located in the center of the town of Honfleur. Its narrow slate houses are reflected in the basin, making it the main tourist attraction of the town. I have several posts on it so will cut it short and just load up the new pictures from my last trip this week,
It is entirely surrounded by quays accessible to the public. The Vieux Bassin or old basin is surrounded by the Quai Sainte-Catherine to the west and for part of the south side. The south side extends Quai Sainte-Catherine via Rue Montpensier. Via an underground route, the Claire stream feeds the basin. The eastern part of the basin is only occupied by a dozen constructions constituting the Quai Saint-Étienne. Three alleys lead to Quai Saint-Étienne. On the north or sea side is Quai de la Quarantaine. The movable bridge over the channel towards the outer harbor formed by the Morelle completes the circumference of the basin. The rich stone mansions on Quai Saint-Étienne, with two floors and sloping ceilings, contrast with those on Quai Sainte-Catherine, whose narrow and tall houses, up to 7 floors, slender their wooden facades protected with slate
This old basin with an area of approximately one hectare (10 000 m2) has a length of 130 meters for a width of 70 meters on the south side and 85 meters on the north side where the channel is located to the port of Honfleur. The Vieux Bassin is home to the Honfleur marina, with its 80 berths, 30 of which are dedicated to visitors. The latter is also home to the Cercle Nautique, which organizes numerous events throughout the year, including the Fête des Marins. Your visit to the old port of Honfleur will continue with that of the fishing port. Its fleet of around forty units specializes in gray shrimp and scallop fishing. Finally, the history of this port would not be complete without taking a look at the river port which hosts all the cruise ships circulating on the Seine. All in wonderland of Honfleur.
At 45 meters high, the Grande Roue or ferris wheel makes your head spin, On the east parking lot, the Ferris wheel offers a perfect panorama of Honfleur and its surroundings, You can also see the Normandy bridge, Le Havre, the entrance of the Seine and the Tancarville bridge, if it is a clear day.
