Well , this is the wonderful sublime walks we took in lovely Luxembourg Ville with the family on many occasions. One of my favorite country/city to have visited and lucky it has been several times over the years since even when visiting France stop over there too. Let me tell you more from an older post to take this wonderful square out and give the credit it deserves on a post of its own. Hope you enjoy it as I.
The Place Guillaume II is in the district of Ville-Haute. It is named after William II, king of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg. The square is better known as Knuedler, which comes from the Luxembourgish word Knued (en. knot), by reference to the knots worn by Franciscan monks in their belts. A gigantic market is held on Place Guillaume II every Wednesday and Saturday. You will mainly find local foods such as fruit, nuts, vegetables, a wide variety of cheeses, fish, meat and other local specialties which you can enjoy sitting on a bench near the market stalls.
There is work going now where the Place Guillaume II will be totally change, and me will look forward to see it, The parking du Knuedler will be close due to this work but nevertheless we always parked at parking Théâtre when visiting, and once at parking Monterey, As said once parked we walked and the Place Guillaume II is very close to the Place d’Armes (see post) and the Grand Ducal Palace (see post). A new, larger elevator/lift that will serve an additional underground level is to be installed, as is a change in the appearance of the square. most of the work will be completed in the first half of 2023. The entire project should therefore be completed by 2024.
A bit of history on this sometimes overlook square. In the 13C, the square is the site of a Franciscan church and monastery, which was confiscated in 1797 by the French. In the following decades, the monastery is destroyed and the square is rebuilt. In 1844, an equestrian statue is erected in honor of William II of Orange-Nassau, who reigned from 1840 to 1849 and who, one year before his death, donated to the Grand Duchy its first constitution, one of the most liberal in Europe at the time. The pedestal of the statue presents the coat of arms of the house of Orange-Nassau and the city of Luxembourg as well as those of the twelve cantons. The main building there is the City Hall which started construction in 1830 and completed in 1838. This neo-classical style building hosted its first communal council on the same year. There is ,also, the city tourist office.
