The Grande Rue of Mont Saint Michel!!!

Here taken an extraction from several older posts to tell you about one street that is the village really. Other than the abbey and its museums, you can spent a good time of the day or the whole day here. Let me tell you a bit more on the Grande Rue of Mont Saint Michel!!!

The Grande rue street goes in layers upwards to the next loop of streets  A narrow street that takes on the assault on Mont-Saint-Michel, is lined with 15C and 16C mansions. with evocative names from medieval times. With the first pilgrims, curio shops settled in the village. In these small stalls, everyone could buy pilgrimage pellets stamped with the shell or representing Saint Michael. Today, the shopkeepers maintain this tradition of the Middle Ages and serve pilgrims and travelers from all over the world in search of a souvenir of their passage.

The Grande Rue is narrow and made of stones, it is lined on either side with houses, shops, inns and restaurants that date from the 15-16C. You can’t miss the Grande Rue. Enter through the main gate. You’ll see the Tourist Office on your left, and on your right the entrance to the Grande Rue. The street climbs steeply up through the town and eventually leads to the Grand Degré or Grand Staircase and the Abbey. You’ll also find some of Mont St-Michel’s museums there.

The Grande Rue, the main artery of the village, is protected by three successive gates. The Porte de l’Avancée, cart and pedestrian, leads to the courtyard of the same name, which houses the former Corps de Garde des Bourgeois (16C). Once you have crossed the Porte du Boulevard, you are facing the drawbridge, called Porte du Roy. Here begins the Grande Rue, which goes up to the abbey through the village, and has preserved its medieval shops and signs. The passage of the drawbridge also leads, on the right, to the rampart path.

There you go folks, a dandy street indeed. Hilly and cobblestones but worth the climb and see some of the prettiest houses and shops in all of Normandy. Even if getting too touristic at lately, it is worth the detour for many. Hope you enjoy the post on the Grande Rue of Mont Saint Michel!!!

And remember, happy travels, good health, and many cheers to all!!!

  1. I would like to go back soon for another visit, but at the same time there is the memory of those crowds of visitors. How else can you do it in such a small space attracting so many people.
