This is Montchauvet !!!

Another of my memorable times while living in Versailles and working in Paris for 9+ years was coming to these quant towns/villages off the beaten path such as Montchauvet. I found me pictures in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me, This is an off the beaten path but worth the detour me think, And again thanks for reading me since Nov 2010! Therefore, this is my take on this is Montchauvet !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I

The village of Montchauvet is located in the Yvelines department no 78 in the Île-de-France region of my belle France. The village is 15 km from Mantes-la-Jolie, and Houdan, 17 km from Anet, and 45 km from Versailles, It is situated slightly off the D11 road that connects Bréval to Saint-Cyr-l’École, The village has less than 300 inhabitants, Of course, we came here from Versailles along Rue de la Paroisse right on Rue du Maréchal Foch continue on Avenue de l’Europe, Avenue du Général de Gaulle ,Rue Royale then right turn on Rue Albert Samain, left onto Rue du Maréchal Joffre, continue on Avenue Clément Ader,or D91 road to connect with the N12 highway dir Dreux/Chartres bear right to exit D156 road or Route de Petit Clos dir Gallouis continue same road passing La Queue-les-Yvelines bearing right onto Route de la Gare or D155 road continue bear left onto the D42 road or Rue Louis Bellan thru the village of Garanciéres continue on Rue du Général Leclerc and then bear right onto the Noël Benoist on same D42 road continue road change names but is the D42 passing village of Orgerus on the Grande Rue continue and then make left turn onto Rue de la Goupillerie continue same road name Rue de la Clairiére passing village of Prunay le Temple bearing slighly right continue on Route de la Mare aux Clercs passing village of Mulcent continue same road now name Rue de Montchauvet then Rue de la Font de Mane go around a big loop in the village bearing left onto the Rue Phernaux ,then right onto the Rue de la Butte Ancelot and left onto Rue Fromenteau ,right onto Rue de la Côte Vacher onto Place de l’église and the church,

The Church Sainte-Marie-Madeleine has the chancel and nave date from the 12C and 13C. The square bell tower dates from 1912. The baptismal font dates back to the 13C

.The Pont à Arches en pierres or Stone arched bridge is located over the Ouville stream. It was built during the reign of Philip Augustus. It is called the Pont de l’Arche or Arch Bridge.

The Porte de Bretagne gate is a remnant of the old fortifications, the second enclosure built at the request of Philip Augustus.

The 19C lavoir or wash house is on the road to Mulcent, has been fully restored.

The ruins of the keep. preserved as they were. The motte is surmounted by a keep associated with the construction of a new town by Louis VI and the Count of Montfort in the second quarter of the 12C.

Other things to see here is the Château des Trois Fontaines, bordering the village of Dammartin-en-Serve. (see post), It was built for Catherine de Medici, but she did not enjoy it much. Today, it is a private residence and is not open to the public, only visible from a distance.

A bit of history I like tell us that in the 12C, the site was fortified by King Louis VI the Fat. The castle was built in 1136 by Amaury de Montfort, and the town was surrounded by walls. In 1378, the town was captured by Du Guesclin. King Charles V, and later Henry IV, had the castle completely demolished. On June 8, 1944, a British military aircraft was shot down over the commune’s territory. Its six occupants, including Royal Australian Air Force pilot J.E. Todd, are buried in a section of the municipal cemetery.
