The Villa Rhumbs- musée Christian-Dior of Granville !!!

Again looking at my cd rom vault of pictures found some not yet in my blog and they should , as my blog is my life’s history of all the places in our wonderful world I have been in alone , with family or with friends over the years. I have written before on Granville, but here is a must to visit, Therefore, here is my take on the Villa Rhumbs- musée Christian-Dior of Granville !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The City of Granville in the dept 50 La Manche in the region of Normandie of my belle France. We were glad we visited and have come back for more, and eventually more ! This is a nice town my family enjoyed even if very hilly. You need to concentrate in one area and then  move on by car to the next one low town or high town (basse ville ou haut ville). The roads of D971 from Carentan, D924 to Villedieu-les-Poêles and D973 from Avranches. All leads you here. Granville is located 25 km from the expressway A84 (E401). It is also crossed from north to south by the D911, the coastal road to Avranches.

The musée Christian-Dior museum is housed in the villa Les Rhumbs, the home where French fashion designer Christian Dior grew up. He was born in Granville on January 1905. He was baptised in the Church Notre-Dame de Cape Lihou (see post) in 1908, The Belle Époque-style villa, perched atop a cliff above Granville, was built in the late 19C in the middle of a park. Featuring a winter garden designed by Madeleine Dior, it is named Les Rhumbs, a name derived from the 32 points of a compass rose. His parents bought it when he was one year old. His mother, Madeleine, cultivated flowers in the English garden that would later mark the couturier’s career, whether for the dresses he designed, the perfumes bearing his name, or, several decades later, the jewelry of Victoire de Castellane. Roses, along with lily of the valley that would later inspire the perfume Diorissimo, became his favorite flowers. Serge Heftler-Louiche, who would become CEO of Parfums Christian Dior after the war, lived next door to the villa. At the age of six, Christian and his family moved to Paris but kept the villa. He returned there every summer during his youth, tending the garden and perfecting his botanical knowledge, spending time reading seed catalogs. At 20, he designed the pond and pergola, creating what would later become the Christian Dior Garden. In the 1930s, his mother, Madeleine, died. His father, Maurice, a gambler at the casino de Granville, was ruined by bad business deals.

In the 1930s, the town of Granville bought the villa Les Rhumbs. and planned to raze it to create a lake. The project was finally abandoned and a public garden opened in 1938. The transformation into a museum took place in several stages in the 1990s. It was managed by the Présence de Christian Dior association from 1993, with financial support from Dior, notably from Elizabeth Flory, in charge of heritage at Dior, as well as other donors. The museum is the only one to be labeled a “museum of France” exclusively dedicated to a couturier (fashion designer). In the 2000s, the rose garden was redeveloped.
