The town of Beynes is in the Yvelines department 78 , in the Île-de-France region of my belle France. The town extends into the Mauldre valley, and is 25 km from Versailles, 25 km from Mantes-la-Jolie, 29 km from Rambouillet, 71 km from Chartres, with closer towns already mentioned in my blog as Montainville, Créspieres, and Vicq, The town is 463 km from my current home, Again found me several pictures in my cd rom vaults that should be in my blog for you and me, Therefore, this is my take on the Church Saint Martin of Beynes !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

Another of my memorable times while living in Versailles was coming to these quant towns off the beaten path such as Beynes. Went by it on the D191 many times on my way south to France and Spain to avoid tolls !
The Church Saint Martin dates from the 11C, this church has seven side chapels on either side of the nave. Various alterations have been made over the centuries, which explains why the choir is higher than the nave. The bell tower, which surmounts the south chapel, is covered with a hipped slate roof. As early as the 8C, the land of Beynes was cleared by the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés (see post) of Paris, and they built their first place of worship there. The current building dates from the 11C, but work continued until the 18C.

The bell tower dates from the 12C and 15C. It appears to have been partially rebuilt in 1773, then transformed between 1830 and 1880. The rectangular tower surmounts the south chapel, which is the oldest part of the building: 12C capitals are found at the base of the bell tower.

The choir, the oldest part, dates from the 12C, while the nave and the side aisles, with their basilical layout, are from the 18-19C. The Virgin and Child: a polychrome stone statue from the 14C. The tabernacle: the 18C carved wooden altar, surmounted by a 17C altarpiece, This tabernacle was carved by monks who reproduced certain elements of the portal of the Church Saint Gervais (see post) in Paris. The two small wooden statues adorn the sides: Saint Vincent and Saint Nicholas. The capitals of the choir: remains of the original 12C church have been brought to light: columns, Romanesque capitals, the start of a double-rolled arch and slightly broken Romanesque arcades.
