I have written before on many things in Paris and sometimes I must return back to them for an encore. I have written on the buildings that make it this quant area of my eternal Paris in the butte Montmartre, but not much on this particular one, the moulin de la galette, However, found me couple pictures from my cd rom vault that best describe it so need to be in my blog for you and me, If not in itself the area around it are a must to visit at least once in your lifetime, me a few times…..Therefore, here is my take on the Moulin de la Galette of Paris !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Moulin de la Galette was an entertainment venue popular with artists. The windmill itself is closed to the public, but you can eat in the restaurant of the same name, just below the monument. The moulin de la Galette refers to two mills, currently, the only working windmill on the Butte Montmartre in the 18éme arrondissement of Paris, located on rue Lepic, as well as its sister mill, visible at the corner of rue Lepic and rue Girardon. The whole complex once featured a famous public ball opened by the Debray milling family in the 19C. The Moulin de la Galette is actually made up of two windmills: the Blute-fin and the Radet , between which a public ball was opened which took the name of “Moulin de la Galette” the Blute-fin mill was built in 1295. Currently integrated into the plot of a private residence, it is no longer accessible to the public. The Radet mill has existed since 1268 and was formerly called the “Chapon mill”, after its previous owner. In 1924, Pierre-Auguste Debray emptied the Radet of its mechanism, which was again moved to the corner of Girardon and Lepic streets, planted on the roof of a building that had become a restaurant. After serving as a dance hall and music hall, then as a room for public radio and television broadcasts, the room, closed in 1966, became an ORTF studio and disappeared with the Office in question in 1974.

Nowadays, the Blute-fin mill is located exactly at 75-77 rue Lepic and that of the Radet, at the corner of 83 rue Lepic and 1 rue Girardon, both representing the former Moulin de la Galette. Major painters including Auguste Renoir and Vincent Van Gogh featured it in their work. You can see Auguste Renoir’s Bal du moulin de la Galette at the musée d’Orsay in Paris. Vincent Van Gogh’s oil paintings from the Le Moulin de la Galette series are on display in various major museums across the world (Chicago, Tokyo, Berlin, Buenos Aires and others). Many paintings such as Eugène Cicéri (musée Carnavalet ) or Vincent Van Gogh (muséum de Fundatie in Zwolle) took the mill Blute Fin as a principal subject for showing the one as the Galette, Because under the name of Moulin de la Galette ,we can find many others with showing the Radet and the Blute-fin, The platform on top of the Blute-Fin serve as a point of reference to identified the paintings and photos of the mills. More works such as the Au bal du moulin de la Galette, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1889). Bal du moulin de la Galette, Ramon Casas (1890-1891) Le Moulin de la Galette, Charles Maurin (v. 1894), Bal du moulin de la Galette, Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1876).
