The streets of Paris, part XVI !!!

I am again to tell you about more streets of my eternal Paris. I have many many posts on Paris and several on the streets of the most beautiful city in the world. I have come up with pictures from cd rom vault that should be here for you and me.  As always thank you for following my blog some since 2010. Therefore, here is my take on the streets of Paris, part XVI !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.

The rue de la Manutention is in the Chaillot quartier or neighborhood of the 16éme arrondissement or district of Paris. The Debilly footbridge, which crosses the Seine, is located roughly in line with Rue de la Manutention. It begins at 24 Avenue de New-York and ends at 15 Avenue du Président-Wilson. It has the particularity of ending, from Rue Fresnel, with a staircase leading up to Avenue du Président-Wilson. It bears this name because it ran alongside the buildings of the Military Manutention, which disappeared during the construction of the Palais de Tokyo (see post). Previously Rue Basse Saint-Pierre, which had been called Rue Saint-Pierre. The street borders the site of the former Savonnerie carpet factory, so named because it had been established in 1627 in an orphanage whose residents made soap. The factory was transferred in 1826 to the grounds of the Gobelins factory and the site was used by the Manutention militaire or military food depot in buildings rebuilt in 1836. These buildings burned down in 1855 and during the Great War or WWI ,were rebuilt twice. The warehouse was replaced in 1936 by the Palais de Tokyo. It took its current name by decree of February 26, 1867. In 2002, the Palais de Tokyo proposed to the artist Robert Milin to develop an abandoned space alongside the museum. A Jardin des habitants or resident’s garden was then created.

The Pont Alexandre III is located in both the 7éme arrondissement or district and on the quartier des Invalides no 26 or neighborhood as well as the 8ème arrondissement or district and the Quartier des Champs Elysées no 29 or neighborhood of Paris, The Pont Alexandre III  was built during the Belle Époque opened just in time for the Universal Exposition of 1900. The bridge is decorated with lampposts and sculptures of cherubs and nymphs. Tall pillars on either side of the bridge are topped with large gilded statues, and connects the Invalides to the Grand and Petit Palais. Few Parisians know that the axis of the Alexander III bridge is slightly skewed compared to that of the Seine. Far from being an error on the part of the architect, this orientation of the bridge was intended to be in perfect continuity with the Esplanade des Invalides. The bridge thus participates in the Republican axis created under the Third Republic for the Universal Exhibition of 1900 for which it was built.

I can never be tired of writing talking about the Place de la Concorde, or before Place Royale or after Place de la Revolution, and then peace, concordia Place de la Concorde! I started by the gate statue in front of the Hôtel Crillon and de la Marine walking into the wonderful Obelisk of Egyptian origins and right into the wonderful sublime sentimental Jardin des Tuileries. Here came by the museum of the Orangerie and Jeu de Paume as well as the pond; looking straight into the Arc du Carrousel and far to the Louvre. The Luxor Obelisk was erected in 1836 at the initiative of the King of the French Louis-Philippe in the center of the square. It is a pink granite obelisk, dating from the 12C BC, offered to King Charles X by Mehemet Ali, Viceroy and Pasha of Egypt. The monument, weighing 230 tons and measuring 23 meters in height , was originally located in the Temple of Thebes (Luxor). another obelisk which was the pendant of the entrance to the Tuileries Palace is still there, it is covered with hieroglyphics.
