The Church Saint Hilaire of Nogent le Rotrou !!

As usual lately, digging into my cd rom vault of memories found me new pictures that should be in my blog for you and me. The town of Nogent le Rotrou is worth the detour to see more, me think, The town of Nogent-le-Rotrou is located in the Eure-et-Loir department no, 28 in the Centre-Val de Loire region of my belle France, Therefore, this is my take on the Church Saint Hilaire of Nogent le Rotrou !! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Church Saint-Hilaire is the oldest of the three churches in Nogent-le-Rotrou. The original structure dates back to the 11C with the chancel built in the 13C. The nave, tower, and bell tower were erected in the 16C. In the 19C, fourteen stained-glass windows were created and installed. Also, has stained-glass windows from 1866 and 1947. The organ was built in 1876.

The founding charter of the Abbey of Saint-Denis, dating from the first quarter of the 11C, mentions the existence of a church dedicated to Saint Hilary, located above the Huisne river. Geoffrey III, Viscount of Châteaudun and Lord of Nogent, gave the monks the Church Saint Hilary with its cemetery, tithe, and appurtenances. The church and its parish were confirmed in 1160 by a bull of Pope Alexander III. The church underwent two building campaigns during the 16C. The first doorway leads to the bell tower, for which a construction contract dates the start of work to 1548 and its completion to 1560. The second is attested by a date inscribed on the south aisle and the “old” sacristy, both dated 1588. The church was used as a burial place; priests, curates, nobles, and bourgeois were buried there until the 18C. The Church Saint-Hilaire underwent extensive renovations during the 19C. The apse, then hidden by an altarpiece described as “modern,” was reopened and fitted with new stained-glass windows. The nave and the apse were also covered with a plaster vault, certainly after 1840. Finally, a new sacristy was built after 1860 as an extension of the north aisle. The presence of a former sacristy and a morgue, located at the end of the south aisle, to the east for the former and to the west for the latter, is attested on a map from 1853. They were destroyed before 1878.
