The Teatro Reina Victoria of Madrid !!!

I had this wonderful institution mix in with other posts and really, it should have a post of its own, me think, I have expanded on the text using the older pictures in my blog to this nice post. We took a leisure time to walk all over and see these magnificent architecture buildings full of history we love !! Therefore, let me tell you my take on the Teatro Reina Victoria of Madrid !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Teatro Reina Victoria was inaugurated on June 10, 1916 by the Kings Don Alfonso XIII and his wife, Victoria Eugenia, of which it adopted her name. In the building it is possible to highlight its spectacular Claraboya on the armchair courtyard, which in its early years opened to provide ventilation of the room and also for the enjoyment of the spectators who went to the theater, a space that has capacity for more than 600 spectators , In his first artistic stage, the Reina Victoria Theater dedicated himself to representing musical pieces. It started with operetas and later with zarzuelas until specialized in high comedy. The Reina Victoria Theater was acquired in January 2018 by the García Azpiroz family, owner of Coruña fishmines, to the Arequipa Productions Society of actor Carlos Sobera. In September 2020, Pentación Espectáculos, under the direction of Jesús Cimarro, began to manage the central room. This lasted until June 2025.

The Teatro Reina Victoria is a historic theater that hosts a different performance every day ranging from comedies and stand-up routines to dramas. They offer the option to purchase ticket bundles, allowing you to attend the theater more often at a lower cost. Initially, the theater focused on operetta; over time, it shifted to zarzuela before specializing in high comedy. Despite the building’s attractive Modernist façade, a traditional layout featuring a foyer flanked by two staircases, a horseshoe-shaped auditorium embracing the stage, and a large skylight that could be opened to ventilate the hall. The large window in the upper-floor lounge was a bolder architectural feature. The theater retains many of its original ornamental and structural elements, such as the black marble flooring and the spectacular stained-glass window in the hall, which can only be viewed from the inside. Its façade is one of the most distinctive among Madrid’s theaters, featuring stained glass by Maumejean and Talavera mosaics. It has a seating capacity of over 600. Above the auditorium, there is a skylight that, in the early years, used to open to ventilate the hall.

And the story continues as the Reina Victoria Theatre was acquired in January 2018 by the García Azpiroz family, owners of Pescaderías Coruñesas from Arequipa Producciones, a company belonging to actor Carlos Sobera. The historic Reina Victoria Theatre is set for a rebirth under UMusic Hotels, a project launching in 2027 following the owners’ renovation of three historic buildings: the aforementioned Reina Victoria Theatre, the Meneses Building, and Casa Allende. The UMusic Hotel Teatro Reina Victoria will be a five-star hotel featuring 70 rooms and suites. It will also offer extensive dining options, a spa, a fitness center, a rooftop area, and, of course, the historic Reina Victoria Theatre, with a seating capacity of up to 600. UMusic Hotels is the new international hotel brand created by Universal Music Group and Dakia Entertainment Hospitality Group is continuing with its expansion plan.

A bit of history I like tell us that after the demolition of the building that housed the *Cervecería Inglesa* (English brewery) a venue that, at the turn of the century, hosted gatherings of figures such as Benito Pérez Galdós, Jacinto Benavente, and Leopoldo Alas “Clarín,” and which ironically stood on the site of Cristóbal de la Puente’s *corral* (open-air theater) around 1560, the entrepreneur José Juan Cadenas commissioned Espelius to build a theater on the plot facing Carrera de San Jerónimo and the corner of Calle de Echegaray. The project, signed on June 12, 1915, was completed on June 8, 1916. Two days later, the venue opened with the three-act vaudeville “El capricho de las damas” ( The Ladies’ Whim) by Blasco Soler and Asensio Mas, featuring music by Luis Foglietti and the participation of Cadenas himself. King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia attended the premiere.
