At Calle de Alcalà ,on the angle to calle del Barquillo,in a former palace now you find the Instituto Cervantes , a wonderful place to expose the Spanish language and culture all over the world; the building is a fantastic architecture marvel. The Instituto Cervantes or Cervantes Institute is located on Calle de Alcalá, 49, is a Spanish public organization whose two main objectives are the promotion and teaching of the Spanish language, and the dissemination of the culture of Spain, Latin America and Hispanic Africa. It takes its name from the writer Miguel de Cervantes y Saavedra. It was created on March 21, 1991 by the Government of Spain, with the high patronage of the kings of Spain and dependent on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is present in 88 cities in 45 countries, through its centers, classrooms and extensions. The building, formerly known as the “de las Cariátides” or affections was previously occupied by the Central Bank, designed in 1918 for the Spanish Bank of the Río de la Plata.
It has a second location used as a teacher training center situated at the Colegio del Rey on Calle Libreros, 23 in Alcalá de Henares (see post), the birthplace of Cervantes. The Teacher Training Center (CFP), based at this Alcalá de Henares site, has established itself as a benchmark for both initial and continuing teacher training. The best example of this work is the Master’s degree program in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language, offered in collaboration with the Menéndez Pelayo International University.
The Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE), established in 1988, certify the holder’s level of competence and proficiency in Spanish as a foreign language. The Instituto Cervantes awards these diplomas on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, with the University of Salamanca participating in the development of content and assessment. They cover six learning levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. The Instituto Cervantes also operates the *Aula Virtual de Español* (Virtual Spanish Classroom), which organizes online courses. In Spain, its efforts have focused on teaching Spanish to immigrants, work carried out in collaboration with the Official Language Schools. Another function of the Instituto Cervantes is organizing jointly with the Royal Spanish Academy and the Association of Spanish Language Academies, the International Congresses of the Spanish Language; these are forums for reflection on the Spanish language held every three years in a city in Spain or Spanish America, with the collaboration of the host country. The Instituto Cervantes library network is part of the Spanish Library System and constitutes the largest network of Spanish libraries in the world. Through its centers, the Instituto Cervantes provides exhibition spaces where Spanish artists and creators of Latin American origin can display their work. It also collaborates in organizing concerts, film screenings, theater productions, and other events related to Spanish-American culture.
