The monument to Federico Garcia Lorca at the Plaza de Santa Ana of Madrid !!!

The city that I lived as a teenager and came back so many times over the years, it has become like my second home. Walked it, trained it, bused it, planed it , biked it, you name it I have done it all there . And now ,glad to find me this recent jewel of a picture in my cd rom vault to share it in my blog for you and me. Therefore, here is my take on the monument to Federico Garcia Lorca at the Plaza de Santa Ana of Madrid !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The monument to Federico García Lorca, a poet and playwright who lived in the early 20C. It is a the Plaza de Santa Ana! located in the heart of the so-called Barrio de las Letras, (see post) its space is delimited by the Calle Principe, Calle del Prado, giving only street numbers to its west and north flanks, where the Plaza del Ángel and the Calle Núñez de Arce ends.

The Monument to Federico García Lorca is a public artwork by the Spanish sculptor Julio López Hernández done in April 28, 1986 , The sculptor was appointed a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, his alma mater ! Located in the Plaza de Santa Anna (see post) opposite the Teatro Español (see post), the monument consists of a monumental bronze statue dedicated to the poet and playwright Federico García Lorca,(see post) who was assassinated in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War by Spanish Nationalists in Viznar, Andalusia.

The idea of building a monument to the poet in Madrid dates back to 1984 on the occasion of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Lorca’s famous play Yerma. This bronze statue depicts the poet facing the Teatro Español, holding a lark or nightingale, a familiar bird in Lorca’s poetry in his hands. At the beginning of the 20C, the Residence of Students was home to some of the most important cultural figures in the history of Spain. Lorca himself, Dalí, Buñuel, Rafael Alberti, and Jorge Guillén lived there. Juan Ramón Jiménez and Miguel de Unamuno were also present in this center, which perished during the Spanish Civil War, but bequeathed to us an unforgettable intellectual circle. International talents such as Albert Einstein and Marie Curie joined it. The memory of this Residence, its legacy, and the atmosphere that reigned in the streets of Madrid at the beginning of the 20C explains, in any case, what Lorca’s theater, which is also part of his poetry, conveys to us. Today, these streets may not have been the protagonists of his plays, but they had an enormous influence on the man who created them. He spent much of the last years of his life traveling. In 1931, he founded La Barraca, a theater company dedicated to performing the classics, from Lope de Vega to Calderón de la Barca. La Barraca’s goal was to bring the art of theater to parts of the country that would not otherwise have had access to these works.
