The Church Saint Etienne of Lille !!!

Again, for the story, It took me a while , worse when you have family about an hour from the city. But often said, living and visiting are two different things . When in the area stay with family and this time again, however, did it in reverse order, when to see Lille and its sights, and then went to see family. I went by it, and feel should be in my blog as well. Therefore, let me tell you about the Church Saint Etienne of Lille !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Saint-Étienne Church ,47 Rue de l’Hôpital Militaire initially in 1606 , the chapel of the Jesuit college, and consecrated to the Immaculate Conception , it only took its current name in 1796 after the destruction of the original church during the Austrian siege of 1792. Itself destroyed in 1740 by a fire, it was rebuilt from 1743. Also in Baroque style, it is one of the largest Jesuit churches in France. It contains a remarkable carved wooden pulpit by François Rude and several paintings from the 17C to the 19C.

When the Jesuits were expelled from France in 1765, the chapel became that of the municipal college. But the latter was moved to Place aux Bleuets in 1767. From 1778, the building of the old college became a military hospital and the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, the hospital chapel. It is in this chapel that the 434 deputies of the three orders of the bailiwick of Lille met in March 1789 to prepare the Estates General of 1789. Decommissioned in 1791, the chapel served as a military armory from 1793 to 1796. After the destruction of the Saint-Étienne Church in 1792, the parish found itself deprived of a place of worship. This is how in 1796, the old chapel of the Jesuit college was reopened for worship and took the title of Saint-Étienne parish Church. The facade of the church, 29 meters high, is made of cut stone. The Rue de l’Hôpital-Militaire, is very narrow, further accentuates the impression of height. Its style, resolutely classic, is also inspired by the baroque of the Gesù church in Rome. We can observe two superimposed orders: Ionic for the lower part and Corinthian for the upper part. On the pediment, a semi-circular bas-relief bears the date of 1747 and the monogram of the Society of Jesus, IHS.
