This monument to the Infanta Doña Isabel de Borbón, was proposed by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1951 to the then mayor of Madrid, Count of Santa Marta de Babio, to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the Infanta Isabel de Borbón y Sajonia, Princess of Naples, and twice Princess of Asturias, popularly known as “La Chata”. She was the daughter of queen Isabel II and Francis of Assisi of Bourbon. She married Gaetano of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, Count of Girgenti, son of Ferdinando II, King of the Two Sicilies; they had no children. The monument was installed near one of the entrances to the Parque del Oeste on Paseo del Pintor Rosales which was at the end of Calle de Quintana ,where her old palace is still preserved. Work on the monument, began in late 1953 and was completed in April 1955. On either side of the sculptural group stand two limestone vases, and behind them, a large granite wall studded with fleurs-de-lys, flanked by two Tuscan columns by a broken curved pediment, framing a large crowned coat of arms of the Royal House of Bourbon, a rectangular plaque containing a large “Y” for “Ysabel” (according to the old spelling) between two also oval coats of arms: one with three fleurs-de-lys of the Bourbons, and the other with the bear and the strawberry tree, of the Madrid City Council. Figures on either side, on a lower step: a flower girl holding out a rose to the honoree, and a caped Castizo doffing its Cordoban hat to present it to the onlooking public. The inscription at the foot of the pedestal and in incised letters on a mock stone phylactery reads1851 /to her Royal Highness /the Infanta Isabel / 1931.
