The Palais de Justice of Paris !!!

I have written before on many things in Paris and sometimes I must return back to them for an encore, and Paris is a huge one indeed. I have written on the buildings that make it this space in the Île de la Cité but not much on this particular one, the palais de justice, However, found me couple pictures from my cd rom vault that best describe it so need to be in my blog for you and me, If not in itself the building around it are a must to visit at least once in your lifetime, me a few times…..Therefore, here is my take on the Palais de Justice of Paris !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Palais de Justice is located in the 1er arrondissement of Paris, on the Île de la Cité, with a footprint of approximately four hectares. It houses the Paris Court of Appeal, the Special Criminal Court (sensitive cases), and the Court of Cassation. It surrounds the Sainte-Chapelle, is adjacent to 36 Quai des Orfèvres, and is adjacent to the Commercial Court, the Police Prefecture, and the Paris Bar Association.

The Rue de Harlay is located on the Île de la Cité, in the 1er arrondissement of Paris Centre. It borders the Palais de Justice de Paris (courthouse), separating it from Place Dauphine. This street is named after Achille de Harlay, president of the Paris Parliament (under the French Ancien Régime, presidents of the parliament were presidents of the chamber), and later first president of the Parliament of Paris. A street 8.75 meters long was laid out around 1607 on land granted to Achille de Harlay, which ran along the wall of the gardens of the bailiwick, known as the “king’s garden.” It is mentioned under the name “Rue de Harley” in a 1636 manuscript. After the latter’s subdivision in 1671, a passage was opened opposite Place Dauphine between Rue de Harlay and Cour Harlay. Notable buildings here see pic back facade of the Palais de Justice (courthouse) entrance to the Criminal Court. At No 2 the Hôtel de Harlay (Bar association house), then Place Dauphine.

The Palais de Justice is the former Curia Regis from which the Parliament of Paris and all the former sovereign courts originated. It was the residence and seat of power of the kings of France from the 10C to the 14C. Important remains of this court remain: the Great Hall with its kitchen, the Conciergerie, the Sainte-Chapelle, (see posts) several towers, and the grounds of various buildings. The façade overlooking the Cour du Mai, the entire main entrance to the Palace, was rebuilt between 1783 and 1786 in neoclassical style with a colonnade. The monumental wrought iron gate, very ornate with gilding, which opens onto the Cour du Mai was executed in 1776. The Palais de Justice took on a new political dimension under the Restoration. Indeed, since Louis XVIII and Charles X, judicial debate has been competing for preference over parliamentary debate. In 1840, a royal decree formalized the project plan for the enlargement and isolation of the courthouse. The plans were modified in 1846. Louis-Philippe, however, did not see the work completed due to the outbreak of the 1848 revolution, and it was under Napoleon III that the work finally found its cruising speed. The statues of Charlemagne and Philippe Auguste were completed in 1860.
