This is one of those towns we came in my local road warrior trails while living in Versailles, the choices are endless just here alone. It is worth the detour for the quant pretty real towns and villages of my belle France, I am glad to have found me this picture in my cd rom vault that made me do it for you and me. Therefore, here is my take on this is Rochefort en Yvelines !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.
The village of Rochefort-en-Yvelines is located in the Yvelines department no 78 in the Île-de-France region of my belle France. The village is part of the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse Regional Natural Park. It was nominated for the Most Beautiful Villages of France in 2025, with 226 participating villages and 182 ranked. Rochefort-en-Yvelines finished at 14. The village is 16 km from Rambouillet, 9 km from Dourdan, 4 km Saint-Arnoult-en-Yvelines (main toll booth on the A13 autoroute), 6 km from Bullion, 46 km from Versailles, and 429 km from my current home, The access roads are the D 988, which connects Orsay and Palaiseau to Ablis, the D 27, which connects it to Rambouillet, and the RD 149, which bypasses the village via a bypass. An interchange in the neighboring village of Longvilliers provides access to the nearby A 10 autoroute at exit/sortie 10. Icame here from Versailles along the Avenue de Paris back to the palace continue bear left on Rue des Vergennes bear left on rue des Chantiers overpass the train station Chantiers continue changing name to the Rue du Pont Colbert continue to connect with the N12 highway dir Vélizy-Villacoublay to connect with the A86 outer beltway of Paris to exit N306 dir Chevreuse which joins the N118 dir Orsay to connect with the N104 or La Francilienne road to connect with the A10 autoroute dir Bordeaux at exit/sortie 10 péage or toll of Dourdan connect with the D149 at roundabout bear right onto the D988 or Rue Guy le Rouge to City center passing by the wash house or lavoir, getting back on the A10 continue past Arnoult en Yvelines reducing the tolls ! On way south !
The Lavoir double or double wash house, on either side of a basin; timber-framed drying room with brickwork. It was built around 1861 on the site of a drinking trough that already existed at the beginning of the 18C, given to the town in 1858. This wash house was a gift from the Countess of Rochefoucauld, apparently motivated by the lack of a public wash house in Rochefort. Restored in 2005 with the help of the Park de la Haute Vallée de la Chevreuse. It is located along the rue Guy le Rouge just before entering the centre ville town’s center.

Other things to see here with more time are the Feudal Castle: remains of the fortified castle remains ; former 11C castle built by Gui le Rouge. The Saint-Gilles-et-de-l’Assomption Church: Romanesque-style stone building from the 11-12C. The “Princes’ Chapel” houses the tombs of the Rohan family. Former bailiwick from the 17C, currently housing the city/town hall. Château Porgès built between 1896 and 1904 for the diamond merchant Jules Porgès. It was a huge undertaking that was never completed. Today, it is home to a golf course. The Place des Halles is the vibrant heart of the village, imagine the echoes of the covered market of yesteryear. Pay attention to the details: scallop shell, wall rings and a mysterious pulley.
A bit of history I like tell us that in the second half of the 11C, Guy I (II) de Montlhéry de Rochefort, known as Guy le Rouge, who inherited the viscounty of Étampois Chartres from his mother Hodierne and his uncle Guillaume de Gometz, had an imposing fortified castle built at the top of the oppidum. The lordship, endowed with the title of principality, passed over the centuries into the hands of various families, all linked together. In 1596, Rochefort fell to Hercule de Rohan. The principality of Rochefort remained the property of the Rohan family until the French revolution. The Rochefort branch, the only one remaining, still bears the title of “Prince of Rochefort”. The castle was rebuilt in the 18C and was then demolished. Around 1853, the city/town hall moved into the bailiwick building ,where it still stands today, which had formerly served as a court and prison. It was bequeathed to the village in 1831 by the Rohan family.
