This is a nice town and a wonderful off the beaten path visit of Chevreuse. I am glad to have found me a picture in my cd rom vault to show in my blog for you and me, When I was in Versailles, I came often to this town and walked all over it. Therefore, here is my take on the Church Saint Martin of Chevreuse !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.
The Church Saint Martin oldest parts ,the bell tower can be dated back to the 11C. The initially pyramidal bell tower was replaced during the 19C by a slender spire. Its Gothic-style main door, possibly originating from the Abbey of Port-Royal-des-Champs, once opened onto the cemetery. Inside, its height is surprising, as is the steep slope of the central aisle, which could symbolize Christ on the cross. On the east apse, three 16C and 17C stained-glass windows provide beautiful light, highlighting the millstone, depending on the time of day.

The classical French organ case from 1732 by organ builder Louis-Alexandre Clicquot. “A Meal at Simon de Restout’s” by Jean Restout (1741), “The Pilgrim” by Eugène Dumoulin, “The Assumption of the Virgin” depicted above Chevreuse by Eugène Lacoste (1858). In the choir, marouflaged canvases by Baron de Coubertin (1858-1860) depicting saints traditionally venerated in the region: Saint-Gilles, Saint-Lubin, Saint-Madeleine and Saint-Martin (canvases restored in 2013 by the village). Modern statues of Joan of Arc and the Virgin, as well as the ceramic Stations of the Cross by Maes. The superb recumbent statue “Christ at the Tomb” from the 17C and “Christ on the Cross” from the 16C, of Norman origin, which seems to fly in the choir. The church also has a historic bell donated in 1659 by the Duchess of Chevreuse, Marie de Rohan.
