The Musée du Parfum de Fragonard in Paris !!!

I have written before on many things in Paris and sometimes I found me new things not yet in my blog that should be, This is the case lately of finding pictures in my cd rom vault , and Paris is a huge part of it. I have written on many monuments of Paris ; this is another nice one to see and looking forward myself to see it again; worth the detour, me think, I worked across the street for several years !! Therefore, here is my take on the Musée du Parfum de Fragonard in Paris !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Musée du Parfum, aka the Musée du Parfum de Fragonard, or simply the Musée du Parfum – Fragonard, is a private museum dedicated to perfume, located in the 9éme arrondissement of Paris at 9 rue Scribe. Created in 1983, it traces the history of perfumes from the Egyptians to the 20C. And to think not posted yet until of something that was across the street to me at no 2 for over 2 years in the area working in Paris ! The first museum on Rue Scribe was established in a Napoleon III-style building ,constructed in 1860. Its rooms feature period furniture and perfume exhibits, including antique perfume bottles, containers, toiletries, and stills for steam distillation of perfume extracts. The museum also explores the history of perfume making and packaging. One exhibit features a perfume organ composed of tiers of ingredient bottles arranged around a scale used for blending perfumes. In 2014, Fragonard acquired the property located at the address on Place de l’Opéra.

The Musée du Parfum de Fragonard re-opened in 2015, this perfume museum is sure to delight lovers of fine fragrances. Behind its captivating exhibits lingers the scent of the renowned Fragonard Perfumery, a family business founded in 1926 in Grasse, the heart of French perfumery. The perfumery takes its name from Jean-Honoré Fragonard, the celebrated painter of Louis XV, whose father was a glovemaker and perfumer in Grasse. The collections displayed in the museum were assembled from the 1950s onwards by Jean-François Costa. They comprise a collection of decorative art related to the art of perfumery, enriching the Fragonard brand with a cultural and museum dimension. Following the museum on Rue Scribe and the Théâtre-Musée des Capucines, this is an original and educational museum that reveals all the secrets of perfume. The setting lends itself perfectly to such an undertaking. The Perfume Museum is housed in the former Eden Theatre, an Orientalist-style building that was later partially demolished and converted into a velodrome. Restructured to accommodate the museum, the space has retained the decorative vocabulary associated with 19C industrial modernity, combining stucco, Eiffel beams, glass blocks, brick walls, and an elegant glass roof. It boasts magnificent collections of perfume bottles.

Among Paris’s unusual museums, the Fragonard Perfume Museum captivates visitors with its enchanting scents and centuries of fascinating history. Come discover or rediscover the treasures of this unique museum, located just steps from the Opéra Garnier: admission is free! The Perfume Museum offers a unique museum experience, presenting in an educational and original way all the stages involved in creating this legendary luxury item and everyday essential: perfume. The Fragonard Perfumery reveals all the secrets of its production: raw materials, harvesting, extraction, distillation, formulation, industrialization, bottling, and of course, the creative process and the art of the perfumer. Then, in the second part of the museum, an exceptional collection of antique perfume bottles traces the history of perfume from ancient Egypt to the 20C: kohl pots, pomanders, vinaigrettes, perfume burners, potpourri jars, travel cases, smelling-salt bottles, precious flasks…

The Perfume Museum, was the first to open in Paris, in 1983. After many months of renovation and expansion it re -open in 2015, it now houses a collection enriched by numerous recent acquisitions made by Françoise Costa. Unusual, rare, and precious, these new works of art complement an already comprehensive collection, which also includes curiosities such as a civet, a balance scale, and objects related to the production and extraction of perfume plants. Fragonard, a perfumer based in Grasse since 1926, shares its centuries-old expertise and unique heritage with visitors, recounting the history of perfume from its origins to the present day. A pioneer in the field, Jean-François Costa began his collection of perfumery art objects in the 1950s, at a time when perfume did not arouse the curiosity it does today. Initially driven by professional interest, he quickly became a leading collector, assembling a collection unique in the world, both for the quality of the pieces and for their number and diversity: distillation apparatus and art objects from antiquity to the mid-20C.

Displayed in the style of a cabinet of curiosities, the pieces exhibited in this first space evoke the history of the perfumery laboratory. The display case presents objects used in the past: apothecary jars, maps, engravings, animal products, measuring instruments, and botanical illustrations. In addition, an interactive map offers an olfactory journey across five continents to discover the most iconic fragrant flowers: osmanthus from China, bergamot from Italy, sandalwood from Australia, and more. Here, visitors are immersed in the atmosphere of an early 20C perfume factory. Stills, vintage photographs, and archival and recent films trace the various stages of perfume production and illustrate the evolution of the craft over the last hundred years. While modernized and mechanized, the techniques remain the same: those of the men who cultivate, harvest, select, blend, and bottle these precious essences. The museum also invites you to indulge your senses during a perfumery workshop. For 1.5 hours, under the guidance of a perfumery professional, you will learn to combine aromatic, citrus, and orange blossom notes to create your own eau de Cologne. You will leave with your artwork in an elegant 100ml personalized bottle and its pouch, a diploma signed by the teacher and your student apron.
